Several people have told me that they used the painted shells and their hermit crabs died.  I looked it up on the internet and it says that these shells are painted with a product that is poisionous to the crab.  It is important to only use real shells and never buy the painted ones for your crab.  It will also kill your crab if you give them tap water.  They should only have bottled water.  Search the internet before you get a hermit crab, there is alot to know.  If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at zoekaya@netzero.net

I agree. The paint is toxic for crabs. Natural shells are so much prettier anyway. Painted shells are gaudy. Water conditioner is available very cheap for adding to tap water to remove the chemicals that they don't tolerate. My crabs get fresh and salt water bins for drinking and bathing. They need humidity, not enough to drown in. They need temps of about 70 degrees. ZoeKaya knows what she's talking about. Research is essential to the care of these cute critters. Wire cages alone are not the way to raise them. My, I did ramble on, didn't I!?
