NaPoWriMo WHAT?
It is not some Native American celebration or tradition. It stands for:
National Poetry Writing Month.
Every year, there is a writing challenge for National Poetry Month to write a poem a day for all 30 days in April. There is a website that gives you writing prompts and suggestions if you need some added inspiration. (April is National Poetry Month)
April is the
cruelest
month breeding lilacs
out of dead land
t.s. elliott
Now if you are a poet, or a writer who sometimes does a poem here or there, trying to force yourself to write something every day is of course going to give you mixed results. You are not going to write brilliant poems every day and you should not think for a moment that you will be equally inspired every day to turn out wonderful, lasting work.
It is a challenge however and when it comes to writing and poetry I do love challenges.
Some of the poems I've written I will forget... perhaps a line or idea will wind up in something worth keeping. Some of the poems will be worth setting aside and working on to improve and play with until they are ready perhaps to be submitted for publishing or to be read aloud at poetry readings.
A website to check out is:
readwritepoem.org (google it).
Here's a few poems I've written so far in April.
THE UGLY
APRIL 10, 2008
YOU
FIGURE OUT THE GENIUS
OF THE POETRY IN THE PAGES
OF THE BOOK.
I'VE STARED AT IT FOR HOURS
WANTING TO LIKE IT,
WANTING TO BE INSPIRED BY IT,
LOOKING FOR A PHRASE
WITH A NEW TWIST OR TWO
I COULD MAKE MINE,
BUT ALL OF IT SEEMS DULL
AND SOME FORCED AND BANAL
WHY WERE THESE POEMS
PUBLISHED?

NOT AWFUL
APRIL 9TH, 2008
Despising the helpless waste of sleep
The restless tosses and turns
can't turn off the chatter within,
not by counting,
not by fantasizing,
not by substituting positive mental attitude clichés
You're great! Tomorrow will be a great day.
You can do anything you set your mind to do.
So. . .
It's up to watch old Western
Gary Cooper, trying to teach
Walter Brennan a lesson.
But I LOVE this movie (The Westerner)
And don't fall asleep,
But watch it all the way through
And wonder how I will
possibly function this whole day through
with barely two hours sleep.
APRIL 18
I believe her when she writes;
‘half my Nobel prize money goes to you,'.
She doesn't dream she'll get nominated
But when she does
when she wins and forgets her promise to me,
again my heart will break.

GETTING THERE
APRIL 20TH, 2008
The knight is shining armor
The white knight in shining armor
Rescues the damsel in distress
Rescues the black guy in the nick of time.
Fairy tales are alive and well
In corporate loving America.
In movies at your local Cineplex
Coming soon to a DVD near you.
Give me my 300 dollar extra tax return
So I can buy something worth 3,000 dollars
And make easy monthly payments for the next few years
Until I declare bankruptcy when my interest rates
Skyrocket from 4 percent to 12.
Like a wide screen h.d. t.v.
Or a gas guzzling SUV
Or a war on Iraq.
Piper dances and plays a nice soothing tune
We aren't going to pay him anytime soon.
No, that won't happen
in the greatest country in the world.
No.. not anytime soon.
April 21, 2008
The water prays to its shore,
the land erects itself into a mountain
to praise the sky,
The sky stretches itself thin
to filter the universe;
I ask for just one long
kiss.
