PETCO —

Most of the reviews here contradict what you will read at other review sites and if you pay attention to what you really encounter at a petco.... To sum up a long list of negatives best consider this... When you find a label that says "New low price!" the truth is that the price has actually been raised. I was labeling food today and notice that the "New low price" for Wellness brand food was 6.00 more expensive. How can a "new low price" be way more expensive. Petco dupes it customers into spending more money, signing up for the pals club (Do the math, you buy 10 bags of dog food, you get one free: so you basically get 10% off of each of the 10 over-priced bags), and practices deceptive retail marketing.

Animal care is badly lacking and when a vet worthy issue comes-up, the animal usually expires in the filthy "wellness room" before a vet is contacted, IF AT ALL. In my store's wellness room i know of at least one snake that was lost in there and never found as well as some rats that got loose and were never found. I have a vast knowledge of many types of animal husbandry but i am the lone wolf at my store. I cannot stress to you the small amount of knowledge that anyone at the store i work at had before i got there. Do not take any advice from the staff at petco, do your own research, b/c most people working there will bullshit you into thinking they know what they are talking about.

Petco is run like a grocery store, not a pet store. Everyone that works at petco are stockers, not pet experts. Also the conditions of the store are disgusting and this is consistent with every petco i have ever been too. Just a glance towards your sneakers will show many pee stains and fecal matter left over on the floors. Employees are badly paid, under-appreciated, and constantly put down by upper management. Sometimes it seems that corporate policy is meant to intimidate the employees into doing what is cost-effective for petco instead of what is good for the animal. Corporate management are like ghosts; you feel thier pressence, you're scared of what they will do to you, and occasionally you get a glance of one. The fact that corporate office dictates the amount of payroll hours means that often times we are so understaffed that things do not get done; when that occurs the attitude from corporate is "it is not b/c u do not have enough staff to operate properly; it is because the two people on duty are not working the 10,000sqft store hard enough". DO NOT SUPPORT THE CORPORATE PET STORE! It does not benefit your pets, yourself, or your wallet. It puts good, smaller pet stores out of business. And if you are going to become a new pet parent, do your research to find out if you are suited for the animal(and vice/versa) and do not shop at petco unless you want to pay outrageous prices. Petco, where the pets go b/c they don't have a choice.

I would not be surprised if this review is not up for long.

i have worked at petco for 3 years now. so i believe i have a pretty good say about whats right and wrong in your letter. I agree that the few hours given are not enough for what they ask the employees to do. Customer service, animal care, and overall look of the store is reduced by the lack of help. Wellness could be better, although the animals ARE taken care of, in reality it is just a holding facility for the animals not a vet room. the animal usually are lost or spend so much time there that are donated to families. (the vets medication usually don't do anything). NOW where i do disagree with you is that the associated in "most" petcos are well trained and known a heck more about all the animals in the stores than the competitors. They have to go through endless hours of training in the forms of videos, tests, lessons, books etc. so if you find an associate that does not know about a certain animals needs then that associate is either new or wont last in the store much longer. Lastly the prices argument is true too. Petco is a more expensive store than petsmart or pet supermarket. That is corporation's greed and any complaint should be directed towards them and not your in store associates, which in reality love and care about all animals since they themselves usually have some.

I bought my first guinea pig at petco last week. I had her for 8 days, on the 8th day i noticed she wasn't acting herself i went to pick her up and she had bad diarrhea so i called them up and i asked them what to do. They told me to bring her up there, so i did and they said they would take care of her until monday when they would bring her to the vet. Well it wasnt long until i received a phone call from them saying she had died. I want to know what the hell they did to her. I feel horrible because she probably would have survived if i took care of her myself. I will never buy anything from them again. What am i going to do with the empty $80 cage? Cause im not buying another guinea pig after that. I was heartbroken.

Took my dog there about 4 weeks ago, about a week after noticed a little "sore" on his back. Took him to the vet, thought maybe it was something serious, turns out to be a bacterial skin infection, most likely caused by dirty grooming tools. Was pissed, paid 65 dollars to have my dog groomed and had to lay out another 160.00 on pet meds and an office visit. Won't take my dog back ever!!!!
