Oyin Greg Juice —

OyinHandmade.com has been making fantastic beauty products for awhile now, but not all of them worked for me. The shampoo bar didn't lather enough for my tastes and I didn't like the taste of the honeystick. But the Greg Juice. Oh, the Greg Juice. The perfect, lovely Greg Juice.

I'm a curly girl, and as such, I follow Lorraine Massey's Curly Girl routine to a T. Curly hair suffers under most hair-care products and suffers brutally under liquid shampoo; liquid shampoo damages curly hair terribly. It makes it frizzy, unruly, and prickly to the touch. On top of that, regular towels hurt curly hair as well; on top of that, even the most moisturizing conditioners have silicones in them that can cause curly hair to break! I learned in my mid-twenties that everything I had learned about hair care was not written for people with hair like mine. What a rip-off!

Curly hair only needs a few things to survive: conditioner, leave-in conditioner, gel, baking soda, and a microfiber hair turban. You can read more about the routine elsewhere (if you've found Viewpoints.com, you obviously know something about how to find things on the internet), but my chosen leave-in is Oyin's Greg Juice. Greg Juice is cone- and cruelty-free. No silicones, no animal testing. And it's made by a small company, so I feel good about where my money's going. But how does it work on my hair?

After washing my hair with a cone-free conditioner, I spray Greg Juice all over my head. The first thing I notice is the smell. The scent is heavenly: it's not sickly-sweet like most hair-care products' scents; it doesn't smell artificial or cloying. It smells like the complex blend of herbs and vegetables from which it is made. It's a subtle smell with a lot of complex layers: sharp, smooth, calming. You know I need to smell good without the scent being overwhelming, and Oyin Greg Juice does just that. I scrunch my hair up with a dab of gel, wrap it in a hair turban, and read for a bit. I take the hair turban off and go to bed.

I wake up with a mass of gorgeous, soft curls that smell delicious. After I get dressed in the morning, I spray on a few quick squirts of Greg Juice to arm my hair against the day ahead. This is the only place where Greg Juice gets tricky: I live in a relatively moist climate (not humid enough for my tastes, but still humid). Greg Juice IS a humectant, meaning it draws moisture in order to work. And if it cannot draw moisture from the air, it WILL draw moisture from your hair. After the shower, it's perfect as a leave-in, but if you live in a dry climate, you might want to think twice about spraying it on your hair before you leave in the morning. I don't live in the driest of climes, but I am aching to try out Greg Juice somewhere like south Louisiana, someplace where humidity is the word of the day. I think it will be absolutely perfect as a daily leave-in in a climate like that. It works well for me here, but I think it will work really well there.

I get compliments on my hair all the time. Women come up to me and tell me that their hair is curly and that if it only looked anything like mine, they wouldn't straighten it. I tell them they don't have to straighten it; that their hair will look like mine if they change their routine. I tell them about the Curly Girl method. And then I ask them to sniff my head. These women either change their hair-care routines and buy some Greg Juice or they walk around feeling jealous of me and resenting their straightening irons. Dump the straightener for life, curly friends: Go cone-free. And if you're gonna go cone-free, Greg Juice is a lovely, lovely way to do it.
