When registering for my wedding, I was torn when it came to choosing a set of Mixing Bowls. I couldn't decide if I should choose the 3 piece set for $25 or 3 individual bowls for $60. In most of my registry, I choose the cheaper item of the bunch, but when it came to these mixing bowls, I was intrigued by the Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls. I took the plunge and registered for them figuring that if someone thought to buy them I'd be happy, but if everyone thought they were too expensive, I'd just buy some cheaper ones later.
The bowls sold individually instead of in a set, so if anything I thought I would get at least 1. Turns out some nice family members bought me all 3 :) If you only wanted one size, the prices are $15 for the 1.5 Quart Bowl, $20 for the 3 Quart Bowl and $25 for the 5 Quart Bowl. The price may seem high, but it is definitely worth it and here are some reasons why...
Non-Skid Outside
The entire outside of the bowl is covered in a Non-Skid surface similar to all Oxo Good Grips products. What does this mean to you? Check out my pictures and you'll see just how cool this is! I can mix my batter with one hand while adding ingredients with the other. The bowl stays put, perfectly. Of course, if the batter is really thick you'll have to hold it, but for standard jobs it is such a helpful tool.
I often find it easier to lean bowls on their side while I mix just because of the angle. With regular mixing bowls, I always had to hold the bowl against myself in order to get some leverage which is still hard to do or leads to messy clothes. Now with the Non-Skid surface, it's so easy to lean the bowls on the table and they still stay put. It's so very helpful, like having an extra hand!
Stainless Steel Inside
The inside is great because the batter doesn't seem to stick to it as much as it did in the glass bowls I used to use. As you can see in one of my pictures, the bowl was almost spotless with no batter left behind after I poured it into the bowl. There was a little left after making something more sticky, but it was really easy to clean.
The Sizes
I'm a fan of the 5 quart bowl because it is big enough that nothing I mix ever goes over the sides. I use it even when I don't need a bowl that big. The small bowl is nice for mixing other ingredients, and then it's easy to lean the small bowl over the big bowl when pouring ingredients together.
The End!!
It is worth the extra money to buy all three of these bowls. As I cook I kept doing things the old way and then remembering I didn't HAVE to hold the bowl that tight anymore! The new way is definitely much easier. When you are done with them, they nest inside each other perfectly which is also different than the glass bowls I used to have that never quite fit inside each other.
