I first heard of the band Owl City when a good friend of mine sent me there song "Hello Seattle". I instantly fell in love. The song was instantly a hit with me. It was catchy, easy to sing-a-long with, and the beat and rhythm just made you want to tap your foot and put the song on repeat. Then over the next few months I heard a few more singles. I purchased the album Ocean Eyes, and listened to every song on the disc. I loved all of them. All the songs are a combination of electronica/popish music that just catches you a bit of guard, yet I am sure you'll fall in love with the sound, lyrics, and style. With the song Firefiles there are no exceptions. It is fun, exciting, catchy, and a perfect song to sing-a-long to. When I first listened to Firefiles I instantly felt like I was indeed taken to the sky like a firefly. The synthesizer sound bits at the beginning set the motion for the entire song, and entraps you until song ends. The song is a playful one that talks about real life elements (relationships, love, insomnia, technology-social networking sites, etc.) but the tempo, melodies, and sounds take out the intenseness of these real-life dramas and take you to a happier, playful reenactment of these everyday struggles. At least, that is how I interpret the song. As the song reaches the chorus:
"I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems"
you feel as if your just soaring higher and higher contemplating life and the everyday drama and struggles of it. Yet this song reminds you to just have fun and "don't take everything as it seems" Just as the chorus says "That planet Earth turns slowly" I think Adam Young might have been trying to portray to his listeners that if we would just slow down and really take a look at our lives we would realize that everything isn't as bad as we think it to be. I think it is Young's use of lightning bugs, insomnia, relationships, dancing, (seemingly normal things) that adds excitement to this already exciting song.
Overall, this song is absolutely one of my favorites, and it is one I listen to when I want to be in a great mood, or when I am in a fun mood. It just makes me smile and want to sing-along, as well as listen to the rest of the album.
I hope for those who have not heard the song, to listen to it, maybe twice, before making judgement. And if you really like it, purchase the entire album, because if you like this song, I am sure you will like other Owl City Songs!
