Oust Surface Disinfectant & Air Sanitizer —

I am always in the market for products that can make my house smell fresh and clean, while sanitizing surfaces. I have a baby, a teenager, a cat, and a Canadian husband--and we all leave messes around the house. I decided to try Oust Surface Disinfectant and Air Sanitizer in its Clean Scent because its claim that it "sanitizes the air" was appealing to me. Previously, I used the Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Daily Sanitizing Spray which works wonders on my hard surfaces but cannot kill airborne germs. I figured, why not try the Oust product. I am typically not a fan of aerosol air fresheners, but I was willing to put my hesitation on hold. Armed with two cans of the Clean Scent spray, I headed home from the store, ready to tackle the germs head-on.

Oust Surface Disinfectant & Air Sanitizer comes in a 12 oz. spray can and costs about $4.00 in my local supermarket. It is available in three scents: Clean Scent, Citrus Scent, and Outdoor Scent. I chose the Clean Scent over the other options because it seemed the "lightest" option. Oust recommends spraying this product in one room, rather than all over the house, for a 24-hour period, to ensure that no one will have an allergic reaction to the spray. My room of choice for the spray? The evil kitchen, where odors lurk from my kitty, garbage, and cooked meals.

I sprayed the products contents into the air, with great hope that airborne bacteria and odors would be eliminated. What I got was a chemical-laden cloud of scented spray that scared my cat away and made me cough up a storm. I am not sure what smells "fresh" or "clean" in that chemically-scented concoction, but I definitely find it overpowering. Even a small spray permeates the air quickly and is--in my opinion--unpleasant.

However, I was willing to look beyond the strong odor in order to embrace what the spray alleges to do: kill germs, viruses, fungi, and bacteria. According to Oust, just spray it into the air, and it "works by chemically interacting with odor-causing bacteria in the air." When sprayed on hard surfaces, the Oust Surface Disinfectant and Air Sanitizer kills troublesome bacteria like Salmonella and Staph. For those prone to athlete's foot, this spray kills the fungi that cause this problem. Rotavirus (a popular cause of diarrhea--especially for children), Influenza A (the flu), and even Herpes viruses are killed by the Oust spray. That's pretty impressive--and that is only a sampling of the germs that will die once they come in contact with the spray. It even prevents mold and mildew, so use it in the bathroom to keep these problems at bay.

Yet my other hard-surface sanitizer works similarly, and without leaving a chemical residue behind. In fact, the Oust Surface Disinfectant and Air Sanitizer warns that it can be hazardous to humans and domestic animals, because it can cause eye irritation. If I want to use it near my cat's litter box, I hesitate because aerosol sprays are not good for her to inhale. The product reminds uses not to spray it on pets--scary to think that people need a reminder not to douse an animal with surface sanitizer. As with other aerosol sprays, it is flammable, so keep it away from fire.

For those consumers who do not mind a chemical scent and an aerosol product, this is an effective sanitizer to have on hand. Oust Surface and Air Sanitizer has a smart approach to eliminating health threats in our homes--with one product, both the surfaces and air can be disinfected/ sanitized. It proves to be an affordable solution that can be used in many areas of your home, while giving you the peace of mind that germs are eradicated with each spray. If, like me, you are sensitive to chemicals and aerosols, or you have allergies, Oust recommends that you check with your doctor prior to using this product. Good luck and happy sanitizing :)

Thanks for the review. It sounds like Oust is not for me, I'm too prone to headaches!

I definitely won't be getting this one--I'd probably have to use my EpiPen if I did! Crazy warnings usually stem from previous lawsuits. I can see it now..."but they didn't say NOT to spray it on the cat...) Like the warning that coffee is hot when you go through the drive-thru now. Thanks for the review!

Ouch. I know what I am not buying. Tks. And, I sure agree - who sprays the cat with air freshener? What's up with that?

Amy--good idea to just put out the garbage after it is sprayed. I kind of think that if I have to get the family out of the room before I spray something, then it's probably not the best thing to have in the air :)

I had the exact same reaction to this spray. It was so chemical-laden that I couldn't believe it was really safe for anyone to use. Great review!

I am a fan with the Outdoor scent...the clean scent makes me ill too. If I spray I make sure no one is around and that is mostly the garbage after it goes out.
