Some readers have asked that I review places in Rome, since I live here, so I am going to start writing about places which are 'off the beaten track' or which you would enjoy if a native showed them to you. I will call these "When in Rome ... (name) ".
My first secret place is "Ostia Necropoli". Ostia Necropoli is very near Fiumicino airport. You need to have a rental car or a friend in Rome in order to get to this hidden spot.
Ostia Antica is the ruins of the ancient city of Ostia, which was the ancient port of Rome. It is located near the Fiumicino airport also. Ostia Antica is more incredible than Pompeii. It is a huge park of ruins with beautiful lawns and trees and a bar/restaurant. It's lovely to go to even in the heat of summer but you need a car (or tour) to get there.
BUT no one knows about Ostia Necropoli! Ostia Necropoli was the cemetery for ancient Ostia. It is now a gorgeous 4 acre park with the mosaic decorated tombs above ground. You can wander in and out of the tombs without restrictions. It is always empty of tourists - except me - and there is no entry fee.

Here's how you get there from Rome:

Take the Roma-Fiumicino highway towards Fiumicino Airport from the Cristoforo Colombo street in Rome. Just before you turn right to enter the airport you'll find signs for the town of Fiumicino. You will be turning left (south) with the airport ahead of you. There are a few traffic circles but keep heading south. You'll see a small museum on your right. Stop there if you like although I have never found it open!
Go past the museum. You'll see some industrial type buildings on your left ahead of you and a traffic light. You need to turn left at the traffic light but it's not allowed so just go a little ways beyond the traffic light and turn into the first industrial driveway and turn around and go back and then it's a right hand turn for you at the light.
When you get to the first 'intersection' of this small road you might see a very old sign saying "Necropoli" or it might have fallen down by now. Turn left at the intersection and at the end of the street (just an 1/8th of a mile) you will find a storm fence and a gate and one of Rome's best kept secrets awaits you.
Take a picnic and enjoy it sitting on a 2,000 year old tomb. Take a book and spend the afternoon under the Mediterranean pines reading. Enjoy! This place is cool, quiet and very suggestive.

Yeah! I love hearing about places that are less touristy. I will definently add this spot to my "Places to see in Rome" list. I visited Florence, Venice and Rovigo this past Fall but didn't make it to Rome. I plan on it someday soon though :) Thank you for sharing.
