I don't know if you have noticed lately but suddenly it seems that the woods are full of well-meaning wiseguys who are determined to tell us what REALLY goes into hot dogs. I keep brushing those sinister warnings aside as though they were mosquitoes because the truth is that I love a nice wiener now and then and I trust the Oscar Meyer brand (currently manufactured by Kraft Foods Global, Inc. of Northfield, IL). I have been eating stuff like this for more years than I care to admit and have never seemed to suffer adverse effects especially related to this type of product. The key words here are "now and then ..." Realistically, of course, I can see that hot dogs eaten indiscriminately could be a nutritional landmine but even here progress has been made ... namely, Oscar Meyer Light Wieners. I was prepared to play "hard to get" and unconvinced but these wieners are just as good as the original and have 1/3 fewer calories and 50% less fat.
Regularly priced at $3.99, there are great sales on this product at this time of year and I was able to pick up a package of ten regular length for $2. It was one of those double-packs of five each and I stored one in the freezer for later use.
STATS:
Okay, okay ... I'll admit that even good hot dogs aren't in the same class as lean-trimmed steaks or broiled salmon and contain preservatives, sodium and nitrates which do not bear too much brooding about. However, turkey and pork head the list and the product has been inspected and passed by the Department of Agriculture. One link (wiener) is a single serving which contains 90 calories with 60 calories from fat. There are 6 grams Total Fat, 2 grams Saturated Fat, zero Trans Fat, 30 mg. Cholesterol, 380 mg. Sodium, 1 gram Total Carbs, 1 gram Sugars, 5 grams Protein, 6% (D.V.) Calcium and 4% Iron. Not bad for a satisfying snack, lunch or light supper.
TASTE TIP:
Oscar Meyer Light Wieners work perfectly with Arnold Wheat Hot Dog Rolls. For optimum taste, let the meat cool a little after cooking and heat the buns for about 20 seconds to warm them up just a little. These hot dogs are good plain or ball-park style with "the works" ... or try something a little different and douse them with a little drained fresh salsa!
