Oscar Mayer Light Wieners —

I don't know if you have noticed lately but suddenly it seems that the woods are full of well-meaning wiseguys who are determined to tell us what REALLY goes into hot dogs.  I keep brushing those sinister warnings aside as though they were mosquitoes because the truth is that I love a nice wiener now and then and I trust the Oscar Meyer brand (currently manufactured by Kraft Foods Global, Inc. of Northfield, IL).  I have been eating stuff like this for more years than I care to admit and have never seemed to suffer adverse effects especially related to this type of product.  The key words here are "now and then ..."  Realistically, of course, I can see that hot dogs eaten indiscriminately could be a nutritional landmine but even here progress has been made ... namely, Oscar Meyer Light Wieners.  I was prepared to play "hard to get" and unconvinced but these wieners are just as good as the original and have 1/3 fewer calories and 50% less fat.

Regularly priced at $3.99, there are great sales on this product at this time of year and I was able to pick up a package of ten regular length for $2.  It was one of those double-packs of five each and I stored one in the freezer for later use.

STATS:

Okay, okay ... I'll admit that even good hot dogs aren't in the same class as lean-trimmed steaks or broiled salmon and contain preservatives, sodium and nitrates which do not bear too much brooding about.  However, turkey and pork head the list and the product has been inspected and passed by the Department of Agriculture.  One link (wiener) is a single serving which contains 90 calories with 60 calories from fat.  There are 6 grams Total Fat, 2 grams Saturated Fat, zero Trans Fat, 30 mg. Cholesterol, 380 mg. Sodium, 1 gram Total Carbs, 1 gram Sugars, 5 grams Protein, 6% (D.V.) Calcium and 4% Iron.  Not bad for a satisfying snack, lunch or light supper.

TASTE TIP:

Oscar Meyer Light Wieners work perfectly with Arnold Wheat Hot Dog Rolls.  For optimum taste, let the meat cool a little after cooking and heat the buns for about 20 seconds to warm them up just a little.  These hot dogs are good plain or ball-park style with "the works" ... or try something a little different and douse them with a little drained fresh salsa!

The Winermobile BITES BACK! I don't know how I missed this funny comment from you but I am enjoying it now!

I just saw a news story that reminder me of this review. You're going to relish this story!

''Oscar Mayer Wienermobile crashes into home''

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (AP) – One southern Wisconsin homeowner is probably not in love with the Oscar Mayer wiener. The famed hot dog's Wienermobile crashed Friday into the deck and garage of a home in Mount Pleasant, about 35 miles south of Milwaukee.

Police said the driver was trying to turn the Wienermobile around in the driveway and thought she was moving in reverse. But she instead went forward and hit the home. It sat in the driveway as if it were stuck in the garage Friday afternoon. Both the home and vehicle suffered moderate damage.

Nice review AnnaBanana. I don't eat them very often, but it's good to know there is a good tasting light hot dog if I want one.

The Hebrew Koshers might be a good thing for you to review. Or have you done so already and I'll check them out.

Well, I don't think you can be the top banana and a big wiener! Hmm...that would be an interesting combination!

Remember that big huge wiener truck they use to drive around in, handing out Oscar Mayer hot dogs? That's what I want -- A GREAT BIG TRUCK WHICH LOOKS LIKE A WIENER!

"Oh I wish I was an Oscar Meyer weiner. That is what I'd truly like to be. Cause if I were an Oscar Meyer weiner. Everyone would be in love with me." I don't eat beef and pork and I don't like turkey but for some reason I love Oscar Meyer's turkey franks.

Talking about what they are made of. When I was in middle school I found out one of my friends at church wouldn't eat hotdogs but no one knew why. One day at a cookout I asked her mother why Lisa wouldn't eat hotdogs. I'll never forget what she said, "When David (younger brother) was born someone made a comment about his weenie and from that day forward Lisa wouldn't have anything to do with wieners." Sounds like something I would have done!

These sound pretty decent!

AMEN TO THAT! If we thought too much about eating meat at all, we might all end up vegetarians!

JovialCougar wrote on Jul 10, 2009 at 6:51PM

I had a friend in college who was a nutrionist. She said if you knew what was in half the food we eat you wouldn't eat hardly anything. Might as well have a few hot dogs = ignorance is bliss!
