Oscar Review

For anyone who really wants to see something new and funny, take the time to give Oscar a shot.  It's a full cast of stars, the plot weaves and makes you track items and people, and there are cute quips to liven up the overall humor of the situation.

Sylvester Stallone is a gangster trying to go straight and become a banker after making a deathbed promise to his father, a cameo by Kirk Douglas.  His efforts are hindered by his family, friends, and employees, who are played by Peter Reigert, Tim Curry, Vincent Spano, Marisa Tomei, Don Ameche, Chazz Palminteri, plus many more faces you'll recognize.

It takes place during prohibition, so the fashion, music and style are all relevant to the era.  Stallone's gangsters are eager to bump off any nuisances but are bumbling household help.  His daughter is so eager to get out of the house, she contrives a fake pregnancy that creates all kinds of havoc for her Italian Catholic parents.  Stallone's bookkeeper turns out to be a thief, but only from neccessity as he wants to marry Stallone's daughter, only not the one that's pregnant.  Since Stallone only has ONE daughter that he knows of, he's more than a little confused.  Add in two matching satchels, one filled with money, and another with underwear, household help coming and going, cops that are certain Stallone is up to something illegal, and bankers who want Stallone's money but not his partnership, and you have a wonderfully surprising comedy.  

If you are looking for a movie to use as background, this isn't the one, but if you are into following plot twists, then this is well worth your time.  This movie is proof that Stallone can do comedy (something I never imagined).
