I purchased the Oreck XL 7 years ago for $300 and got the "free handheld vac and cordless iron" to boot. My vacuum has lasted well these years in the process of 4 relocations and lots of vacuuming after pets and children. The cordless iron bit the dust 2 years ago, but I wasn't happy with how it didn't stay warm. My handheld vac has worked well in cleaning out the vehicles as well as indoor carpeted stairs. But here recently, it seems to have lost its suction power. But back to the upright...
I like how I can go from carpet to floor and back without having to adjust height. And I have had high pile to no pile carpet to clean. It picks up dirt very well, even doing wonderful in competition to the infamous Kirby vacuum demonstration.
Pros:
Very lightweight, easy to use throughout pregnancies and carrying a baby in arms while vacuuming.
Catches and picks up dirt and keeps it in; it doesn't filter back out into the air.
Long cord allows for lots of vacuuming without having to stop and replug elsewhere.
Cons:
I have had a few bags which popped off and allowed for dirt and dust to collect inside the outside bag. Oreck seems to have corrected this problem and now have bags that fit properly on my model.
On the pricey side, but for lasting as long as it has, it just might reach it's "worthwhile". Repairs and replacement parts can be pricey as well.
Catches hair and strings easily which will wind around the brush and break a belt quickly... the pro side on this is by burning up the belt, it helps save the motor from burning up.
