I would recommend Orbitz travel services, but with precautions:

Orbitz travel service (you can replace "Orbitz" with "Travelocity" or "Cheap Tickets"--they are all the same!) was once a great place to find a bargain.  Sometimes it is still effective, but buyer-beware: their tickets are not always cheaper!  You will still need to search the air-carrier websites themselves if you want to make sure you are getting the best deal.  However, using orbitz first will give you a good idea of which air-carriers provide service from the airports you have chosen to fly out of and in to.

Another down side: it is impossible to fix a purchase-mistake, cancel a ticket, etc. with Orbitz because they not only have strict purchasing policies, but they are not the air-carrier and so do not have access to as many ways to compensate you for difficulties which may arise.  They are definitely not customer-service oriented.

Orbitz also cannot give group discount rates the way a travel agent can.

One perk: Orbitz will call your cell-phone the day of your flight (if you request it at online checkout) to give you an update on your flight status.  They also provide discounts if you book a hotel and/or car service as well as your flight, which could potentially save money in the long run.

I'm glad you brought this review to people's attention. I personally use Travelocity and am very pleased with them so far (I've booked three flights and two hotel arrangements with zero complications). However, not many people realize that going through these tertiary companies (i.e Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia) mean that you're getting a deal but for a price (no pun intended). Majority of the time, their cancellation policies are 100% non-refundable, which I would just tell people forget even considering it. The second drawback are the flight itineraries--some can be downright ridiculous where you're getting the best deal, but taking 15 hours just to get from LA to Chicago by jumping to 3 different gateway cities. Major cool points for writing a great, eye-opening review! :)
