Must have in your living room

This is much better than others in the same price range for your home theater needs one of the best recevier I have ever seen. Being a "musives" junkie I really love this Onkyo TX 7.2. Channel Receiver, it comes with 6 HDMI inputs so I would not consider it just a basic receiver. Hi-def Audio decoders are pretty good for "musives" , I mean music & movies. It comes with video propcessing technology with 1080p upscaling. you can connnect your iphone dock to it also it is ready with Sirruis or XM radio connectivity.Four gaming modes create an audio experience with more realism and impact and it makes music really soothing. The only caveat is , it is a powerhouse and consumes and emitts lots of power and than heat. I would rather like a one change in their design to have fan somewhere it cools down easily.

Onkyo TX-SR608 - Great receiver for the price

5

Nice to see that they are starting to put out quality THX certified equipment for so little.  Onkyo is known for great sounding equipment that tends to run hot.  Having owned a few Onkyo receivers, I can tell you that that is true.  However, they listened to past recommendations, and put a fan in this receiver.  It runs MUCH cooler, now, but still would be recommended to have in a well ventiliated area (as is the case with all electronics, really).  The sound quality is excellent, and has the option to do Audyssee wide and height channels, which adds quite a bit to a home theater experience.  It offers a good amount of inputs as well, so there should be no trouble getting the equipment run to it.  Some have complained about upconverting problems, but I have not seen it quite as much as some have claimed.  It may depend somewhat on the other equipment being used.  Overall, this is an excellent piece of equipment I would recommend to others.

TX-SR608 The ideal set of trade-offs

The internet can be a great resource when shopping for mid-fi gear, but can also be a curse and have you second guessing every decision.  Looking at the players in this price point, I researched Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer, and Onkyo.  Very persuasive reviews can be found for all of these.  I am glad that HDMI has largely taken cable quality out of the discussion, but I believe that the speakers should get the largest portion of your HT budget.  This unit has 3D passthrough, which will keep it from being outdated for the next few years.  The previous version of this receiver got a very solid review in my Sound and Vision, as did the 706 wich had the THX certification.  This one has the THX certification, nice on-screen menus, and dynamic sound compression.  I enjoy the sound quality of this receiver with my NHT SuperOnes, Definitive Tech towers, and my small Energy Take5 set - all of which got a turn in my main listening room.  I also enjoy being able to play my SACDs through this unit.  I have not regretted for a minute that I "settled" for the 608 vs the Denon offerings.  Digital sources can be harsh at high volumes, but I have yet to hear anything for less than double this unit's price that isn't.

Fantastic Value Receiver

5

I was looking for a receiver that was inexpensive and offerered a lot of fucntions and i finally arrived at the onkyo tx608 and i can honestly say that i have no regrets. it was one of the first receivers to offer 3d capabilites. i was skeptical at first and a little hesitant to buy this model because of the heat issues that onkyo is known for which resulted in many problems related to the hdmi plugs not responding properly anymore but i'm so happy that they fixed all of those problems with this new model. after watching a couple movies and playing playstation 3 on it for more than 6 hours the top, back, and front are all still relatively cool. I keep my receiver in a cabinet but i made an apple sized whole in the back plus always keep the cabinet door open for good air circulation. the sound is crisp and loud. i love the audissey microphone that comes with it because it makes setting up a breeze. i would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a greatly priced receiver.

Cant Beat Buying Onkyo Tx SR608

5

There is nothing bad to say about the 7 Channel TX-SR608 Onkyo Receiver. The quality surpasses any Sony I have ever heard and it blows you away when watching your videos in surround sound. We have theatre parties for the adults and for the kids. Sometimes they are even outside on the outdoor projector and screen with the Onkyo set up and sooner or later the entire neighborhood is over watching. They know to bring drinks and popcorn and chairs because If i turn it up  it sounds like you are at a drive in theatre. All we need are golf carts replicating the old muscle cars in the back forty and some fake speakers and we are back in the 60's and 70's. The Onkyo Receiver is the best out there and many of my neighbors have purchased the same once hearing the excellent sound coming from this receiver. Whether my Ipod is hooked up or the DVD i feel as if i am in a professional setting. Of course, there are different settings you can experience and I thoroughly recommend you try them all.

Onkyo is known for great products and this item won't disapoint.

This is a great all around product. If you are looking for a great value on a well known and trusted brand then this one is it. All the functions are easy to use and the product is built to last years and years of use. I have shopped around for this item and other brands do not have the high quality that this item has.  Most competitors items are built with cheap parts and are made to only last a year or so which forces you to buy a new one to replace it. Why would you ever buy an inferior model than this one knowing that it will ave to be replaced down the line? The answer is don't!!! With this item you are purchasing the best that is out there and there will be no need to replace it soon because it will last a lifetime. Before you think about buying a cheaper model than this one consider the life expectancy of the item you are purchasing and are you willing to replace it with another cheap one once it does break or fail.

The Onkyo Channels Receiver receives a better than average score

3

I actually had never heard of Onkyo, but when I needed a receiver, my friends pointed me in this direction. I can say that although I am not wholly satisfied, it has done the job I have asked of it. This product is actually reaching the prime of its career in terms of market maturity. It is actually not as expensive as one might suspect. In fact it is probably cheaper than I would sell it for. In essence, however, this receiver is nothing more than a mid-range product with a few high-end features, such as its great sound quality, perfect entry level, and its handiness. One problem that I did not enjoy having to deal with was the HDMI problems. There were issues with the HDMI video that I was not able to resolve on my own, and had to get taken care of by a professional. Also, my receiver did not lst s long as I had hoped. I had to get repair work, and eventually, a dumpster for it, because it was worthless. Overall, a decent investment, but I advise peopleto do their research before this sort of product.

Great Mid-Level receiver!

4

**The Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2 audio/video receiver is a great mid level unit for anyone who needs the latest in audio and video connections.  With 3d pass thru capabilites, dolby and dts lossless sound codecs, and a hardy amplifier this receiver is a value packed deal.  This unit also features 1080i upscaling for component video, which is signifigantly better than the previous 606, and 607 models.  It also has assignable HDMI inputs.  This version is also an HDMI repeater, meaning it will carry video and audio to be processed by the receiver through one cable. Another new feature is the second line level subwoofer preout for those who enjoy wall shaking bass.  This unit does generate signifigant heat while under stress as is a characteristic of onkyo amps in general but the sound is still muscular and robust, even at refference volumes.  The onscreen GUI overlay via HDMI also makes this unit very easy to program and setup for individual tastes.**
