On the Street Where You Live —

I am a latecomer to the writings of Mary Higgins Clark

I picked up "On the Street Where You Live" while waiting for my husband to have his blood tested, started reading and kept my nose in it until it was finished.  This is the second book of hers I have read.

I have enjoyed reading her books because they are a quick read.  They are entertaining and a release from the stresses of life.  Mary Higgins Clark has been dubbed the "Queen of Suspense" and she takes that title right into the plot of this book.  The main character of the book, Emily Graham, a defense attorney has just gone through a nasty divorce, been a victim of stalking and come into several million dollars.  The money is windfall from a case she had taken on pro bono.  When her ancestral home in Spring Lake, New Jersey comes on the market she buys it and moves in.  Contractors find a skeleton in the backyard while digging for a pool the first day she is there.  The skeleton holds the ringed finger of yet another skeleton.  Family connections of the disappearance of Emily's ancestor's daughter and the recently deceased skeleton start to emerge and Emily finds herself not knowing who to trust yet determined to solve the mystery.  In her research she discovers that three girls disappeared in the late 1800s in Spring Lake.  As two more bodies are discovered she learns that there is a definite connection between the girls of olden days to the newly murdered girls.  Both modern day girls were murdered  on the same exact days of the 1800 girls; 105 years part.  If her theory holds up then a third girl will be murdered on March 31st unless she can find the identity of the murderer.  Is he a reincarnated serial killer or just some unlucky bloke who has somehow found the diary of a madman who lived in Spring Lake more than a century ago.?  The story takes many twists and turns as it unfolds taking the reader on a journey of suspense and puzzle solving.

Little clues given in script may lead the reader down paths of discovery.  Some will be solved along the way while others linger long enough to allow one's imagination to run wild.

The only criticism of the book is that there are too many characters.  It is hard to keep them all straight but in the end it doesn't matter.

Summary:  I love this little novel.  It is a perfect retreat from the world.

Sounds like something my friend Debbie would read. I don't read much thriller and suspense but every once in a while a true story will catch my attention. Right now I am still all into the Christian romance and Danielle Steel and Jodi Picoult.

You need to check out Jodi Picoult's website and see how they are applauding her style. You might also like her books. ~Gigi
