I've eaten at Olive Gardens all over and it's great to know if you run across the familiar sign, the food will be good, the prices are reasonable and the service is fairly standard. It's a comfort while you travel and a nice place to chill when you're in town at home and don't want to experience anything too new or different... but just want the comfort and security of a pleasant and casual dining experience.
I love the level of attention from the waitstaff. They are attentive without being annoying and they cater to you in every area without trying to be your best friend. I'm not sure who thought of the idea that the waiter should crouch down next to your table and write their name on a paper napkin, but I'm thrilled that the waitstaff at Olive Garden is taught to behave in a more appropriate and service-oriented manner.
Most of the servers know the menu really well and can even recommend the basic wines that they're taught tastefully accompany most of the dishes. They know how the dishes are prepared and what sort of sauce and what level of heat to expect etc. They'll direct you to the specials and what's new on the menu and will have the chef prepare something with less sauce, more sauce, add broccoli, no mushrooms in many cases and it's always "not a problem" for any of them.
When they do the Endless Pasta Bowls, they will offer to box up your last order and will even bring you fresh hot breadsticks bagged up to go! This is just a great place for casual and comfortable dining without spending a fortune. Portions are large, but hey... what are those styrofoam boxes for?
