I don't know what made my wife decide to buy a big bag of Ocean Spray Craisins at Costco. Like everything else at Costco, you have to buy BIG -- the bag of Craisins is 48 ounces (three pounds!) and it costs $6.85. I like cranberry sauce and cranberry beverages, so I agreed with the purchase. Now, I absolutely love Craisins and prefer them to regular old raisins.

Craisins are sweetened dried cranberries. A serving size is about 2.5 ounces, and that contains 130 calories and 33 grams of carbs. To be honest, I don't count calories. I look for fat and try to cut back on that. Good thing I like Craisins, as they have no fat. One thing Craisins do have is fiber -- a serving supplies 12 percent of the daily requirement for fiber.

In size and texture, Craisins look shriveled and wrinkly, just like raisins. The main difference in appearance is that Craisins are kind of maroon and raisins are purple-black. In flavor, there's a big difference: Raisins seem to be chewy little wads of sugar to me, while Craisins have the distinctive tartness of cranberries.

I use Craisins anywhere I would use raisins, including mixing them with nuts for a snack, adding them to cereal and using Craisins in recipes that call for raisins. I eat a lot of tossed salad but generally don't like to pile non-salad items on my greens. However, once I tried Craisins on my salad, I was hooked. A couple days ago, I mixed up a big batch of cole slaw that was for a party at work. The recipe called for raisins, so I substituted Craisins and they helped make the cole slaw just about the most delicious I ever had. That's a recipe I will definitely try again!

I have never seen Craisins anywhere other than Costco. However, I shop at Costco a lot and buy my Craisins in bulk there. I haven't needed to shop for Craisins in a normal supermarket, so supermarkets might carry them and I wouldn't know it. In any event, I recommend Craisins. They are delicious and work anywhere you would normally use raisins.

Yes, they are good and a great substitute in cooking. Yes, of course they are available in grocery stores! You don't have to just purchase the gigantic Costco bag.
