Norwegian Cruise Line - Star Review Summary

The Norwegian Cruise Line - Star is getting mixed reviews from our reviewers.  Some say it's the "only cruise line I will go on", but others say it's the "worst cruise line ever".  The Star cruise ship either goes north to Alaska or south to the Mexican Riviera.  Reviewers who recommend the cruise enjoyed the "party atmosphere" as well as the "free-style" way of dining which gave them the freedom to eat when they wanted.  "There was 24 hour eating and the specialty restaurants were wonderful."  However half of our reviewers had complaints related to the food quality. "I felt like I was eating fast food."  Other complaints include the size of the staterooms and the extra expenses.  Looking for a more highly rated cruise?  Then check out Viewpoints top rated cruises, or choose another Norwegian Cruise.

We are always so impressed with all aspects of this cruise line that we put down a deposit for our next cruise while on-board.

Embarkation

Embarkation was very quick and organized. We were greeted with refreshments and friendly service by the check-in staff.

Cabins

The cabin on the Star had everything we...

Alaska is beautiful
However, We traveled to Alaska on the Norwegian Star and were very disappointed in every aspect of the ship.
The staterooms are smaller than any other cruise that I have been on, and the bed was the worst bed I have ever been forced to sleep on, and I was in the Navy. None of my traveling...

I took the Norwegien Star to Alaska from Seattle. I was happy that NCL offered a Saturday to Saturday cruise as I live in New York and the travel time to get across the country is 6-8 hours, plus then the 3 hour time difference.

The boat was beautiful, all of the same places as on the Dawn - so on a boat that big it's nice to already know the names of places and what they are about from having been on another NLC boat.

One difference that was both a pro and a con was that you had to pay for the use of the spa. OK, the obvious con - 20 bucks per day of use or 140 for the entire cruise if you join...

This was our third cruise and this was by far the worst experience we have had.  Everyone that worked on the cruise was nice and friendly but that was about the biggest pro to this trip.  The food was horrible.  I am not a cook and I could make better food than what was served on this ship.  About half the restaurants included cover charges, which defeats the point of an all inclusive cruise if you have to pay to eat.  Norwegians huge slogan is that they have freestyle dining, no need to wear a watch.  On the Star, you cannot get into one of the free restaurants without reservations that... review »

This was our first cruise leaving from Seattle (our home) to Alaska. The ship was clean and our room was comfortable (we had a cabin with a balcony so we could really enjoy the views).

The free food was mediocre...we're used to really good food living here in Seattle and are a bit of a food snob. The food was on the scale of a Denny's or Country Buffet which we never eat at (too many better options in Seattle). So, we paid for the upscale food, which was quite good but way too expensive.

For entertainment, they offered bingo (boring), stupid humilate your spouse games, and karaoke (I was game, but...

This was an opportunity of a lifetime. We saved for years to take this cruise. Never received the itinerary or tickets until 2 days before we sailed. I called the Miami offices to speak to someone and at least to make sure we were booked. They admitted the error but what can you do. Things happen! 3 couples that we met had combined cruises of over 70 cruises and they said they would never sail NCL again. Our first glimpse of the cabin, it was not cleaned. The pillows were stained with God knows what. The buffet and "free food" were mediocre @ best. We ate in the more upscale restaurants, but... review »

EMBARKATION - Getting on the ship was easy but disorganized. Passengers are required to fill our a short health questionnaire. NCL seems really serious about confining the norovirus and keeping their passengers safe and healthy. They even squirt down your hands with sanitizer before you get onboard. At the gangway, crew members greeted everyone with a complimentary glass of champagne or a mimosa. There was no assistance in finding your cabin.

CABIN - Our balcony cabin was on the small side and never felt very clean. It was more cramped than other ships I've sailed on. The bathroom was especially...

I can't fit every complaint I had about my cruise with NCL but there slogan "You're free to whatever" is a joke. It's more like the staff is free to whatever. Our room was at the end of the hall and all you hear all night is a toilet flushing sound over and over and over again and no one would change our room. The disembarkation took over 5 hours even after we stood in line to get a "time" to exit at 8 am we did not get off the ship until about 1 pm. The excursion we went on was a disaster, i was told it was an easy excursion but my family and I ended up injured and scared due to the staff's inefficiency.... review »

The Norwegian Majesty has provided Boston travellers with weekly seasonal runs to Bermuda for a number of years.  While Bermuda is an island paradise, the Majesty is an older ship which is beginning to show its age.  The staterooms are small, the casino is "smoky", and the entertainment is consistantly  invariable.  I have made the Boston to Bermuda run eight times on this ship and the entertainment venues never seem to change.  Meal service in the dining rooms has always been good but buffet food comes up short.  Staterooms are clean and the crew servicing the staterooms have always been... review »

DO NOT GO ON THIS SHIP. MY GRANDMOTHER WAS ON THIS SHIP AND SLIPPED BY THE POOL. THEIR STAFF REFUSED TO OPEN THE MEDICAL CENTER FOR HER. WHEN THEY WERE FINALLY FORCED TO THEY TOLD HER SHE SPRAINED HER ARM (WHEN SHE CLEARLY TOLD THEM IT WAS HER NECK AND NOT HER ARM THAT HURT) AND WOULD NOT TREAT HER ANY FURTHER, THEY LEFT HER FOR OVER 24 HOURS WITH A FRACTURED SPINAL CORD WHEN SHE WAS FINALLY OPERATED ON HER NECK WAS IN HER BACK AND SHE IS NOW ON LIFE SUPPORT AND MAY NOT MAKE IT.

WHEN THE BOAT DOCKED THEY WOULDNT EVEN LET HER OFF THE BOAT THEY TOLD US SHE WAS NOT A PRIORITY. DO NOT TAKE THIS...

For a first time cruiser, I didn't know what to expect of my cruise to Alaska.  I had some preconcieved ideas because of pictures I had seen or things that I had heard from friends.  The ship was huge and a little glitzy.  The state room (inside) was larger than I had imagined.  Not very big but had lots of storage.

The staff was friendly and helpful.  I was impressed at how clean everything was.  There was 24 hour eating and the specialty restaurants were wonderful.  I was expecting mass quantities of fresh seafood which was nonexistant.  That was a big disappointment.

Alaska was...

This was a great cruise...LOVE LOVE LOVE free style cruising....we ate when WE wanted to, not when it was our assigned time.  And we had NO formal nights.  We did dress for dinner, but no formal gowns or ties...vacations are to be relaxing, not stuffy.

We just returned from a 7 day cruise to breathtaking Alaska as a gift to my son and god-son for their high school graduation.  I concur with others about the food quality - I felt like I was eating fast food or slightly better than what's offered in a school cafeteria.  We only dined in the cover charge restaurants twice - Le Bistro and Sushi Bar - both were excellent in quality, presentation and service....what I expected all our dining experiences to be like.  However, paying an additional $60 plus tip for one meal is too costly.  The staff in the buffet area and Blue Lagoon were so disorganized...

I took an Alaskan cruise on the Norweigan Star in June 2007.    This was a great cruise for a great price.   The cruise lasted 7 days and we flew in to Seattle the day before and stayed an extra day on the end of the trip.  I would highly recommend that approach.  It allowed us to have a no stress entry to the ship on cruise day and allowed for Seattle sight seeing  as well.   We did the tourist tours via a Greyhound tour and also did a boat tour.

The cruise itself was fantastic.  This was our first cruise (wife and I) and we had an oceanview room  On this curie that is a requirement.  ...

this was my first cruise, and i really didn't know what to expect. what i looked forward to most were the ports of call, and this cruise had some nice one. zihuatanejo/ixtapa was really great in particular. the boat's amenities are average i'd say, and service was friendly. i've heard that other cruises have restrictive dining times and strict dress codes. norwegian had neither of these, which made the who on-boat experience much more enjoyable for me. the typical norwegian cruiser seems to be a little older than my age group (30's) it seems, and is quite family-friendly. however, if you're looking... review »
