No Reservations —

No Reservations is a 2007 movie starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Kate, a renouned Chef in Manhatten and Aaron Eckhart as Nick, an up and coming Chef who wants to study under Kate and Abigail Breslin, as Zoe.  This movie is a remake of a 2001 German move, Mostly Martha.  Having not seen the original, I can't compare the two.  However, I throughly enjoyed No Reservations.

The Plot

The plot of No Reservations focuses around Kate, an executive Chef who runs the kitchen at a well established and well known restaurant in Manhatten.  She runs a tight kitchen and the others respect her, as well as fear her at times.  The movie opens with a phone call from her sister who is driving into town with her daugher, Zoe, for a visit.  Kate goes to work as usual but receives a phone call during her shift and is informed that her sister was in an accident and was killed.  She leaves immediately to go to the hospital to see her niece, who thankfully wasn't seriously hurt.

Kate becomes the guardian of her niece and struggles to learn parenting, handling a grieving child and continue working.  In the meantime, the restaurant has hired another Chef (Nick) to help fill the void during Kate's abscense.  Nick is an Italian Chef and woes the others in the kitchen with his marvelous pasta dishes.  Kate returns and has trouble adjusting to this newcomer in her kitchen.

My Thoughts on No Reservations

This movie has a moving story about a child who has lost her mother.  Abigail Breslin (Zoe) is wonderful in this part and brings a lot of in-depth character to this movie.  She also starred in Little Miss Sunshine and I think this performance in No Reservations is just as good or better.   The lead actor and actress in this movie were also great.  I loved the chemistry between Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart.

I loved the way this movie played out.  There is rivalry in the kitchen.  Kate doesn't trust Nick at all in the beginning and just thinks he is out for her job.  He is well liked by all the other kitchen help and Zoe takes a liking to him also.  It takes awhile for Kate to mellow but that is part of the enjoyment of this movie, watching the romance between the two form.

This movie isn't a gushing romance like you may first think.  There are some suggestive parts in it and a few places where adult language may be used, but I think this is a good movie for ages 10-12 and up.   Also, I have seen it listed as a comedy.  It is not 100% comedy, so don't go into it expecting this.  I would say this movie is a combination of drama-romance.

If you enjoy cooking, you will especially enjoy this movie since a lot of the scenes take place in the restaurant kitchen.

This sounds like a great movie! I loved "Little Miss Sunshine" and this sounds like another winner. Maybe I'll order it from NetFlix!
