Attention all chocoholics: No Pudge Fudge Fat-Free Brownies are like manna from heaven! Anyone who has read my reviews knows that I'm working on losing weight and making more sensible food choices. My love of chocolate does not help, so I've been on a quest to find the ultimate fat-free chocolate snack. My search is truly over.
For months, I've been seeing the No Pudge Fudge Brownie mix package at a local grocer. I finally gave in and bought one box last week. Let me just say that, while I love to cook, I hate to bake, and never do it. No Pudge mixes require almost nothing, int he way of preparation: all you do is add fat-free yogurt to the mix, and bake. That's it. Truly. How much easier could it get?
The Process:
I don't like vanilla, so I used fat-free, plain Greek style yogurt, which I like for it's richness. Although the box says 2/3 of a cup of yogurt is the desired amount, I used a whole cup, and a tiny bit of skim milk, because the mix was dry without it. Even with the extra moisture, the batter was still thick, but the instructions say to expect this. I was somewhat sceptical, but I went with it. I didn't have a baking pan (like I said, I don't bake), so I used a Pyrex meatloaf pan, sprayed lightly with cooking spray.
The Results:
The instructions mention that the brownies may be difficult to get out of the pan, without the help of a hot knife. I had no such problem. Maybe it was the type of pan I used, but my brownie loaf came out easily. I sceptically cut into it and was pleasantly surprised to find exactly the consistancy I love in a brownie: soft, but firm, moist in the center. I ventured to taste and Lord have mercy - DELICIOUS! Rich, chocolately, decadent! Maybe the best brownie I've ever had. I mean that. I can honestly say this is the best fat-free/diet product I've encountered, so far, and the best baking mix of any kind, I've ever tried:
I think I'll make a habit of making a batch before entertaining, especially during the holidays, so that I have somethng to indulge in while everyone else is digging into the fat-laden desserts that I'm staying away from. I may even try to make these in muffin tins, and make cupcake brownies.
Tips:
Moderation is still something to consider. Keep in mind this is not a sugar-free or zero calorie product. You can't make a whole batch of brownies and eat the entire batch, just because it's fat-free. And you certainly shouldn't use this mix if you're diabetic.
I made my batch last night, ate one brownie, wrapped the leftovers in plastic wrap, and then put the wrapped package in a ziplock bag. This seems to have been anexcellent way of keeping the moisture in - I checked this morning, and the brownie loaf is still gorgeous and moist.
If you can't find these at your local grocer (I've only ever seen this mix at one store), you can order online, directly from No Pudge.
