The No Grain Diet by Dr. Joseph Mercola (Dutton, 2003) is a book that details how you can lose weight by completely cutting carbs out of your diet....at least temporarily.

Dr. Mercola describes our cravings for carbs as an addiction. He offers solid advice and practical application for carbohydrate addicts. He doesn't just state the obvious and leave you to figure out the details on your own.

The No Grain Diet
is packed with helpful tips on tapping into your health, getting a good night's sleep, how to overcome emotional eating, troubleshooting your weight loss program and no-grain recipes.

The good things about The No Grain Diet is that it goes into great detail about how to handle your emotions when you stop using carbs as a crutch. I have tried many times to cut carbs from my diet and I can rarely make it past that 72-hour time-frame of withdrawal symptoms and wanting to fix the ill feelings by eating carbs.

I've read the book and now I'm going to give The No Grain Diet a try. I have not had good luck in the past when i tried giving up carbs, but I am looking forward to using the techniques described in this book to ease the cravings and make dieting a more pleasurable experience.

I totally disagree with Dr. Mercola on many things. (I have followed what he gives for advice and I get emails from "him".) I must be the opposite of everyone because, when I am on a low carb diet, not only do I not lose weight, I get sick! When I eat a decent amount of carbs along with protein and good fats, I lose or maintain (whichever I am trying to do) and feel 100 times better. Atkins nearly killed me! It must be my chemical makeup or something.

Truly, calories in have to equal fewer than those expended to lose weight. 3500 calories equals one pound..blah blah blah. I have never experienced emotional eating until now - when my mom went into rehab for her fractured knee. Now I'm planning the after Easter (I have to wait a whole week!!) candy sales. Hope this works for you. If it does please let me know! Jo
