Nintendo tried to beat the other game developers to the next generation by releasing the Wii U in November 2012. Unfortunately, Nintendo dropped the ball by releasing a console with graphics on par with the Xbox 360 and PS3 and an underwhelming collection of launch games. They also missed the mark with a price point too high for both its 8 GB and 32 GB consoles probably due to a gimmicky tablet like controller in the gamepad. Nintendo tried to have their cake and eat it too by toeing the line between console and mobile gaming leading to a lack of follow through on either. In creating the gamepad, they also overestimated how important off-screen game playing would be to a common game player. Nintendo had lost both the hardcore and casual gamer with their rushed release of their console.

At this point in the review, you are probably wondering why I gave it an 8 and not a 1. Simply put, Nintendo has turned things around recently by refocusing their approach on what made the Wii popular. By changing their approach, they have carved out their own niche in the gaming world yet again.

Their first key move in changing their approach was adjusting the value you get from their consoles. They dropped the mostly worthless 8 GB model which used to retail at 300 USD. This allowed them to move the 32 GB model down to this price point rather than its old 350 price separating their price further from the 400 USD PS4. Another change was including a real game with the console rather than the completely underwhelming NintendoLand. Depending on which console you buy, you can now get either Wind Waker HD or New Super Mario Bros U with New Super Luigi DLC included. These two games provide a much better value in terms of money and quality. Wind Waker HD is a critical favorite from the revered Legend of Zelda series that usually retails at 50 USD by itself. New Super Mario Bros U with New Super Luigi DLC is a fun platformer in the vein of the original Super Mario Bros that usually is about 70 USD for both the game and DLC combined. Also, this game is much closer to the family-oriented games that the Wii was known for because up to 4 players can play together at one time. It truly can be quite fun to have four people running around at once simultaneously causing havoc for each other while cooperating as well. This gameplay was the essence of some of the top family games for the Wii like Wii Sports. By providing these games with the console, Nintendo reaffirmed their commitment to providing fun games rather than the horribly dull, mini-game oriented NintendoLand that came with early Wii U consoles.

In combination with adding value, Nintendo changed their approach by releasing a better array of games to complement the console. In many ways, a game console is only as good as the games it has to play, and, as mentioned, Nintendo flat out blew it with their launch games. Most were simply ports of games that had long been released on the Xbox 360 and PS3. People were not going to buy a Wii U to play games they had already played. As of today, they have made a much better effort to create games that people are going to want to play.

I feel that it is important to make one note before diving into the Wii U offerings specifically. One thing that Nintendo did well from the beginning was backwards compatibility. This means that you can use all of your Wii games and accessories on the Wii U. Also, you can transfer over all of your already purchased virtual console games from the Wii. Neither the PS4 nor Xbox One can play old games meaning that you have to dig out your old consoles to play older games. It is really intelligent that Nintendo made it possible to use your Wii games and accessories so that you can continue to play the older games that you enjoy without digging out your Wii.

Back to the main point, Nintendo has made a much better effort to put out games that people will want to play. The aforementioned Wind Waker HD and Super Mario Bros U are two examples of games that are worthy of consideration. Another game that any Wii U owner should buy is Super Mario 3D World. It is a terrific 3D platformer that has wonderful multiplayer capabilities for up to 4 players. It is the epitome of a great family-friendly game that will provide hours of entertainment. Another game worthy of consideration is Wii Sports Club in the eShop. It is simply an HD remake of Wii Sports but the better motion controls and online play make it worth a purchase. The online play is great whenever you do not have someone around to play with. You can buy any sport you want individually for 10 USD so that you do not waste your money on those that you do not care for. Also, you can simply rent the game for a 24 hour period for 2 USD if you feel that you do not need to buy it. Another area worth exploring for games is the Nintendo eShop where you can buy an array of retro games or new indie games. There are many worthwhile games in the eShop for all types of gamers, but I will not bore you by explaining my own personal favorites. Finally, Nintendo will have some highly anticipated games coming out this year with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. Based on their past iterations, these two games should be great fun for hours of multiplayer fun for all kinds of people. I imagine that we will probably see some other interesting titles coming out in the near future as well.

In summary, the Wii U did not start off strongly, but it certainly seems to be moving in the right direction now. I feel comfortable giving the product an 8 based on the fun multiplayer games available now and coming out in the future. If you enjoy having fun with some of your friends or family, I would not hesitate to consider the Wii U for a source of entertainment.

Graphics Quality
The graphics are great compared to previous Nintendo consoles by providing true HD graphics. However, they pale in comparison to the Xbox One and PS4.

Game Variety
As of now, Nintendo has failed to provide a variety of quality games. This should change in 2014 with the arrival of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.

The Wii you is essentially that system that had so much hype before the release for it's innovative controls, but failed miserably after launch. The Wii U is great for kids or if you are just a Nintendo collector or just looking for some casual gaming, but if you are a hardcore gamer, just avoid it at all cost because there aren't that many games for it and now that the PS4 and Xbox One are out, there no point in getting a Wii U

Graphics Quality
The Wii U although lacking in sales miserably, it does have some gorgeous games to play on. Like Zelda Windwaker for example and Super Mario 3D land

Game Variety
The Wii U doesn't have a whole lot of third party support

Controller Comfort
While the Wii U is struggling miserably and what not, the controller is very VERY comfortable. It's my second favorite controller next to the Sega Dreamcast

Ease of Use
The Wii U is very easy to use. Anyone could just pick up and play immediately

Durability
I did not have a lot of time with the Wii U, but i can definitely tell this thing is built to last. It doesn't feel cheap.

This product is SOOOOOO fun! I LOVE IT!!!

By

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

This product is so much fun, it has brought great fun and entertainment for my entire family. I love to sit down and play games with the kids, and it's great that we can also watch Netflix on this device also. It is very convenient. Also it is really cool that if someone else wants to watch the television then you can actually still change the input on the television, but still play some of the games on the game pad, also you can still watch Netflix on just the game pad while someone else uses the television. It's really a great option and keeps my kids from fighting over the television as much as they used to anyways.

Graphics Quality
I think that they graphics look very well, it is really neat to see how these things get better with each device that Nintendo releases. I really liked the graphics in one of the zombie games that we had, it just looked really neat.

Game Variety
I like that there are so many different types of games, there are games for us adults and the zombie ones that I don't really let my kids play yet. But then there are so much more for my kids to play also, and tons of different character games. We all love Mario though.

Controller Comfort
I wasn't sure about how big the controller was at first but thought that it was neat that you have that big screen to use on the controller. However it turns out that the controller, even though it is very big, it is very comfortable to use and I would not change the size of that controller.

Ease of Use
It is extremely easy to use, I think that is very convenient. My kids are able to do everything themselves, which is really great.

Durability
Seems that this product is very durable, and that it should last for a long time. Besides that I think that all Nintendo products are made that way. I still have every system that they have ever made packed up that we still pull out every once in a while and all of those systems still work great. So I didn't have any doubts buying a NIntendo product at all.

Nintendo is back

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

This is why I started to play video games. This console brings gaming back to its roots. The Wii U can mix a casual and hardcore gamer with ease. It has so many great titles that are great alone or with friends. The tablet screen is shockingly comfortable in the hand and nice and light weight. Games are just starting to tap into the potential of the extra screen. There is so much around the horizon and it is full of amazing gameplay! Imagine RPG's where you never have to pause the game to change inventory. The possibilities are endless. If you need a new console please do yourself a favor and pick up the Wii U I promise you will not regret it!

Graphics Quality
This is not going to beat the xbox one or ps4 in graphics but it is still amazing and crisp. Mario in high definition is a treat!

Game Variety
Endless amounts of great games

Controller Comfort
Every controller they sell for the Wii U is so comfortable. I have never felt fatigue when using anything they offer

Ease of Use
My young singling and father both were able to figure this console out and that says a lot!

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

I love playing with my Nintendo Wii U console. Also love the game which came with. setup was pretty easy, just hook up the console to the correct connections and HDMI. Games in the Nintendo arent as big a collection as the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 but thats okay with me because the games they do have, which is plenty, are awesome to play.
Love playing Super Mario Brothers, Classic forever, Zelda, Lego Marvel and so many more. I love how I can play it using the television and once someone wants to watch something it is okay because I am able to play with it using the controller itself, which has a screen to do so.
I am also able to to play my old Nintendo games which I think is great. Love also how I am able to browse the internet using the Nintendo Wii U. Picture quality/graphics is so beautiful, no doubt Nintendo knew what they were doing.

Graphics Quality
Graphics are awesome.

Nintendo's successful venture into next generation systems.

By

from Belleville, IL

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

Nintendo has always been my favorite video game console creator. However, the classic Wii left quite a bit to be desired. The Wii U takes all the good qualities of the Wii such as game variety and disposes of the negative aspects of the Wii like turning relaxing games into a workout. It is backwards compatible with Wii games and controllers which gives you an even greater variety of games to choose from. It also has new downloadable games on its own Virtual Console along with all the games from the original Wii's Virtual Console. The graphics are amazing, and the speed with which everything runs is phenomenal. There are a few downsides to the system though, the main one being that it produces fewer games a month than the Playstation 4 or Xbox One. The greatest feature of the Wii U is definitely the gamepad it comes with. You play your games on a handheld device that has a touch screen. When playing Legend of Zelda Windwaker, for instance, you can play the game on your tv and have your map up on your gamepad so that you don't have to pause your game to look at the map. The best feature of the gamepad by far is that once a game is started on your tv, you can change the channel on your tv, and your family can watch tv while you play your game exclusively on the gamepad. Overall, my opinion is that the Wii U is the best choice of the next generation game consoles. It's the cheapest of the next generation systems, the graphics are stunning, and the versatility of being able to play a game while you watch tv make this system a must buy for any avid gamer.

Graphics Quality
The graphics on games, even games intended to look cartoon like are great.

Game Variety
There are quite a few games, but they aren't putting out a lot of games each month like other systems.

Controller Comfort
The handheld device fits perfectly into any size hands.

Ease of Use
You can play on the handheld system while you watch tv.

This will be amazing once Nintendo releases more games.

By

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

I like the WiiU. The GamePad is good; I like how it can be used with the games. It is definitely more powerful than the Wii, but there aren't many good games out yet.

Graphics Quality
The HDMI allows for much better graphics than the Wii. The GamePad has decent graphics, but they don't need to be fabulous because most of the time you are looking at the TV.

Game Variety
This is where the WiiU is struggling now. It looks as though a lot of good games will be released this year by Nintendo, so I think this score will be going up by the end of 2014.

Controller Comfort
The GamePad fits nicely in your hands. The buttons are all easy to press and are in reach by your thumbs.

Ease of Use
It may take a little getting used to, but it's a very easy system to use once you play around with it for a little while.

Durability
I haven't dropped anything, but all of the components look well made, so I don't think they would break easily. I still have Nintendo stuff that is anywhere from 5 to 25 years old, and everything is still working, so I wouldn't expect anything different from the WiiU.

The WiiU continues the success of the Wii

By

from USA

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

The Wii U capitalizes on the same concept that drew audiences to the previous Wii, motion and family gaming.
They have taken it one step further by bringing some more adult / hardcore titles to their stable such as Batman Arkham City, and ZombiU. However this is still a system geared towards family and children. This is a good system and offers some interesting and fun filled games for the family, but if you are hardcore gamer looking for action, shooters or racing. I'd advise looking to either the Xbox One or Playstation 4.

Graphics Quality
The graphics are significantly improved over the the Wii, but are not as refined as the next gen offerings from Sony and Microsoft.

Game Variety
Most games on the system are family oriented, and title selection is still fairly limited for how long the system has been available for sale.

Controller Comfort
The game pad is one of the larger more unwieldy controllers on the market. The screen is what makes this difficult for little hands or to hold for a long duration. The Pro controller is similar in comfort to the Xbox360 and Xbox one controller, but is not able to be used as the primary controller for all games due to the second screen functionality.

Ease of Use
The interface for the system is astoundingly easy and navigation is a breeze. The whole family should be able to use the system with ease.

Durability
I have had my system since shortly after launch and haven't experienced any issues with it or the gamepad. I would recommend getting a rubber or other protect case for the gamepad if you have children in your home due to the chances of damage if it is dropped.

Its not the greatest console but its great for some people.

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

Overall, its a great console for those who play like mario type games or donkey kong but not for action based games.

Graphics Quality
All i can say is that the quality is somewhat great, like i mean its not the best if you are into first person shooter type of action games but its great on games like mario and etc...

Game Variety
We are a bit limited on the games the wii has and i hope more will come out soon.

Controller Comfort
The wide of the screen prevents me to have a proper gasp of the wii .

A Great Nintendo System.

Comments about Nintendo - Wii U:

Nintendo has finally stepped up to an HD home console. Is it worth it?

Graphics Quality
The graphics are HD, obviously, compared to the Nintendo Wii's, released in 2006, SD graphics, which even though games like The Legend Of Zelda : Twilight Princess take to their beautiful advantage, just didn't look as good as the PS3 or Xbox 360. The Wii U comes with an HDMI cable (A first for a game system) which doubles as a cable for pretty much everything else: computers, set top boxes, other game systems, etc. The cable comes in black and has the Nintendo logo embezzled on its ends. It snuggles nicely into the system, connecting each of it's 16 ports.

Game Variety
Puzzle games, racing games, action games, adventure games, board games, platformers, sport games, music games, apps, and much more can be found on the Nintendo eShop, which can be accessed online as well.

Controller Comfort
The Gamepad is extremely comfortable, fitting snugly in your hands, including grips and easy button access. To use the touch screen, you need to hold the pad in a tablet like way and use the stylus.
