Nintendo Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess —

Let me first start by saying that I have always been a huge Zelda fan since day one. I've played and solved every version of Zelda including this one. Before I go into the things that bothered me about "Twilight Princes," here are some things that I thought the game did very well.

First of all, the game has tons of great puzzles and most players will take at least 40 hours of playing time to solve the game. In true Zelda fashion it's a huge world and there is tons of stuff to do. I also liked the fact that Zelda has finally grown up and is no longer a kid's cartoon. Since most original Zelda fans are probably in their late 30's, I think it was about time that Zelda grew up a little. Another aspect of the game that I enjoyed was the ability to transform into a wolf. It took me a little while to get used to controlling the wolf with the Wiimote but eventually I got the hang of it. Overall, I liked the way the game integrated the use of the Wiimote.

Now here are a few things that I thought the game fell flat on. The quality of graphics in the game are not acceptable for the new generation Wii console. I realize that the Wii version was ported from the Gamecube version, but I think that Nintendo should've given the game a facelift for the Wii version. Personally, I would've been fine with waiting if it meant a much better looking Zelda game. The graphics seem dark and dull when compared to such games as "Super Mario Galaxy." Mind you, the graphics aren't bad and in some spots they do look pretty good, but overall I was not satisfied.

Second, the game starts out much too slowly and I hate the fact that the game is extremely linear. During the entire game I felt as if I was being told exactly what to do rather then being given the freedom to explore the world how I saw fit. After a while, this task oriented storyline got a bit tedious dungeon after dungeon.

Finally, it's time Nintendo brought Zelda into the 21st century and give us speaking characters and a decent soundtrack. The game feels claustrophobic when you have to constantly read text and the characters only shout out "Heeeey" or "Aaaah." The soundtrack also sounded outdated and uninspiring. It sounded very similar to Ocarina which was great at the time (1990??) but it needs a drastic update for Twillight Princess.

Don't get me wrong, I still had a great time playing Twilight Princess and it is still probably one of the best titles for the Wii. Perhaps my expectations were a bit high, but I just think the game didn't really add anything to the Zelda genre. I constantly had that "been there, done that" feeling over and over again. I really wanted this game to blow my socks off and it just didn't.
