I also own Guitar Hero II and just bought the game so I can't comment on the controller (plus I didn't want to keep replacing batteries in the wireless version), but as far as the game is concerned Activision did make some good updates for GHIII. The first is the note counter, which lets you know how long your streak has been (very helpful for those streak achievements). Also a new set of songs and the ability for online play is a great addition. In the end though the extra songs you can unlock aren't very well known just like GHII and the cost of downloading just isn't worth it in my opinion unless you really like the song/band. Achievements are very unbalanced and way to many are geared to the Guitar Hero experts. The game is still fun and has a lot of really good songs so if you already own GHII you might consider just picking up the game for GHIII.
