My wife and I both have our own camera outfits. While I generally use a Canon G7 semi-pro compact camera, she has a beefy Nikon D200 dSLR. To go with her Nikon camera, she got a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 flash unit. The Nikon SB-600 sells for about $220 at Amazon, and it represents the middle of Nikon's flash range.

I'm an avid Nikon user, and in fact had my own photography business for awhile. When I was looking for a flash, I was looking at both the SB-600 and SB-800. There is almost a $150 difference between the two. I decided on the SB-600, and I can honestly say, unless you need a flash to illuminate something half a football field away, the SB-600 is more than enough bang for your buck. I can set up a backdrop in my living room, and do a full-length portrait using only the SB-600 shooting into an umbrella with a reflector panel on the opposite side, and it's way more than enough lighting.
