The Nikon D80 is the very best Digital camera out there. I have owned a couple of others and used a few to see if they were what I was looking for. I am not a professional but enjoy a good camera.
The D80 has more than an amature needs and everything a beginning professional would want. The sharpness of the pictures are perfect. It has red-eye and many other features right on the camera to 'fix' a photo.
I love taking pictures of flowers, waterfalls and just about anything in nature. It is a bit bulky but it's well worth getting the shots you want. Just buy a neck band to help with hands free.
The battery is the longest lasting I've ever had in a digital camera. When your taking alot of pictures you don't have to turn it on and off. After a while it goes in what I call 'sleep mode', so it doesn't drain the battery. Mine came with a battery charger and it charges really fast. I like that it tells me on the top panel how many pictures I have left to take.
You will have to buy the lens separately but you have a choice of how much you want to spend. For instance I bought a different brand that was a bit less for the telephoto instead of buying the more expensive one of Nikon.
This camera comes with many different settings. Here are a few. Close up comes in handy when taking close shots of flowers, and other small objects. I also like the Night landscape setting for taking scene shots at night, like city scapes etc. It has a Portrait setting shoots portraits with background in soft focus, Sports setting-Freeze motion which is good for Horse or Car races and of course any sports. If you have little ones that don't like to stay still, it works great.
This camera is quite easy to use. I suggest you buy the "inBrief". It's a quick reference guide that tells you how to use custom settings, it also tells you what every button on your camera is for, plus many other helps. This is in my camera bag at all times. I refer to it often.
When buying this camera or any for that matter, go to a place where the people actually use the cameras and know all the features. I bought mine at a Wolf camera, every sales person there actually teach classes on how to use and take pictures. Whenever I've had a question they have answered it honestly and showed me settings on the camera etc.
To find the camera for you, ask friends & family, go to sites like this where you can see what actual users like and dislike. Knowledge is power!
