I love my Nikon D80 Digital SLR camera. My husband bought it for me for Christmas 2 years ago and I have taken 1000s of pictures since then. It is a great camera that take fantastic pictures in the completely automatic mode. It also allows me to put it in partial automatic mode, and change just the settings I want to change. There are mode for taking portraits, nighttime pictures, sports pictures, landscape pictures, and more. These modes are easy to switch to at any time. It also allows me to put it in a mode for "shutter priority" or "aperture priority". In these modes, for example, you can set the camera's aperture setting, and then the camera automatically detects the appropriate matching shutter speed, or visa-versa. And, of course, you can also choose completly manual, where you provide all the settings!
The lense that came with my Nikon D80 is 18-135mm. I really need a bigger lense to do the sports photography I'd like to do, but it does OK for now.
For basic photography, the D40 would probably been enough.
