The Nikon D60 is an upgrade from the older D40x and a worthwhile one at that. It's an excellent walk around camera for anyone who loves taking great photos. It's fast, takes very sharp life like photos. Very easy to setup and use with the good menu system it won't take long to get used to it. You could just put it on Auto mode (Point and shoot) and get very good results if you choose. It's is much better than ANY point and shoot camera, it will blow you away with the image quality.
The D60 is on the Smaller side of the DSLR cameras so it's easy to carry and very light weight, good if you are walking around with it all day.
Quick touch-ups can be done in camera without the need for a computer such as DLighting, filter effects and even B&W. With 10.2 MP once you view the images at full size you will learn to love how good this camera really is. Combined with the Nikkor 18mm-55mm AF VR lense (Kit lense) it's a good start. I bought the 55mm-200mm AF VR also to give me more options when shooting outdoor wildlife. The only limitations are your wallet as you can put Pro Lenses on the D60.
So if you are looking for a DSLR and don't want to spend a lot of money and still have a great camera then check out the Nikon D60. For $540 with the 18mm-55mm AF-S VR lense it's a steal.
