My wife last year mentioned she wanted to buy a nice camera, to get out and take some nice pictures. She wanted to take a photography class and take pictures as a hobby. I decided to buy her one for Christmas, and after researching many sites, many camera owners and anything else I could, I settled on the Nikons.
The only reason I bought the D60 was the price, the others were more expensive, with the exception of the D40 and D40x. The D40 does not have the options the D60 has, and is only 6 megapixel. If you're going to take the pictures, for the price buy the D60. Though the D40x is a 10 megapixel too, with fewer options than the D60 for close to the same price.
The Nikon D60 is great! The picture quality is simply amazing. I can shoot a picture across the yard, and see hairs on the face, the detail is awesome. I've had several people comment on the color, and quality of the pictures I took. The more I use this camera, the more in awe I am of it.
It's very easy to use, for normal use, however using manual features is a bit more demanding. Though Auto is usually good enough for anything you'd do. This isn't just with the Nikon D60 though either, because any Digital SLR you buy will have these features, and if you don't understand them, you'll be lost. We did take a camera class, and eventually will take photography classes, and I really recommend you doing the same. Join a camera club in the area, as networking with others will help you.
If you want a good priced great camera, with lots of options, the D60 is for you. Don't waste your time on the D40 as the 6 megapixels could limit you for large pictures. Some come out OK from a distance, which is normally where you'd view them anyhow, but for the extra money the 10 megapixel is much better. I have had to cut the top and bottom off of images, to make an 8x10. So blowing this up would be easy! I'd recommend the Nikon D60 to anyone!
