I waited a long time to convert over to a digital camera; waiting for the quality to get good enough to compare to the film camera, and last year finally gave in and bought one. After a lot of research I settled on the Nikon D60 for it's reasonable cost, similarity in look and feel to a film camera, and brand reliability.
I received it promptly and immediately started playing around with it. Even after a year I know I still have a lot of learning to do and figuring out of all the menu settings, but I've been very happy with it just the same. In point and shoot mode it is easy to use for anyone and the lenses provided (wide angle and 200 zoom) offer a good range as well.
It has a built in flash as well as a hot shoe to attach flash to and both are easy to use and work well. The menu offers a large variety of built in digital filters and effects to apply to pictures taken, as well as settings to give different exposure, cropping and lighting options. The menu settings are pretty self explanatory and easy to figure out, but the camera does come with both a manual and DVD explaining all of it's functions, as well as shooting tips. It has both automatic and manual modes, and both are easy to navigate.
It has great battery life and the battery charges easily and quickly on a plug in charger
The frame is sturdy, nicely shaped for the hand, easy to handle, and comes with a nylon strap. It has a decent weight to it without making it too heavy to hold or shoot with for extended periods, and it's built to last and withstand mild abuse.
To take pictures one has to use the small viewfinder, as with a traditional camera, but it does have a large window in the back of the camera to view pictures on. Some don't like not being able to use the larger window to actually take the pictures, but since I wanted something that felt more like a film camera I prefer it. It has all the benefits of a film camera from feel to picture quality with the added benefit of the instant gratification of a digital camera. Since it's a Nikon it's easy to find accessories and other lenses for it that don't break the bank and I hope to be using this camera for years to come without problems.
