This review is less about the technical aspects of this model of camera, but more about my purchasing experience, what to look for, and my general assessment of the camera kit I purchased.
I purchased this camera in a kit from Costco in December '07. $849 for the camera body, two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm VR), a Nikon-branded camera bag, two instructional DVDs from the Nikon School, and 1GB of Lexar SD memory. read full review »We purchased the Nikon DX40 bundle pack through a local warehouse store. This camera was ready to go right out of the box, taking amazing pictures with almost no initial learning curve. Camera captured quality images in outstanding resolution in various lighting conditions and settings. The manual is extensive, and more help/support is offered online. With some dedication, learning all of the capabilities of this camera should prove worthwhile. The camera body accepts many alternate lenses. We are looking forward to enhancing our extensive photo collection with these high quality images. The images...

Even if you're not an expert with an SLR, this camera allows beautiful shots in the automatic mode. Once you become familiar with the camera, you will be able to experiment with all the other shooting modes it has to offer.
It is compatible with other Nikon lenses, but for starting out, the basic 18-55mm lens is just fine.
I've only had my camera for a few weeks and I'm very pleased with the wonderful photos I've been taking!
For the average consumer, this is the perfect camera to capture speacial events and everyday life. It may be a little big to fit into a small purse, but it is small and light enough to carry around while hiking and to a friends wedding.
I had a friend that uses one as a back-up camera for photographing speacial events. You need to know that you can only use AF-S lenses, but Nikon is coming up with more lenses all the time.
