I have had my Nikon D40 (the D40x actually...same camera, more megapixels) for about 10 months now and am loving it!
I am just an amateur photographer and this is my first SLR. I moved up from an Olympus digital Point and shoot. My main motivation for moving to an SLR was my frustration with the shutter delay with my P&S. I would love to learn more about photography also and get into shooting in manual. BUT, I have a low tolerance for frustration when I am learning something new, so I didn't want an SLR that was so complicated I would be missing all the great shots of my daughter while...
read full review »I bought this camera as a compliment to my current professional system based on the Nikon D2X. It's a great "walking around" camera for a pro as it will do all the things that pros are used to asking of a camera, great nikon metering, kit lens is decent, programming and screen quality are par with the flagship D2X. All this makes it the perfect 2nd camera or "pro's snap shot camera". I would not consider doing pro work with it, that's the X is for, but as far as it shooting excellent quality, tough nikon build quality, superior metering and battery performance for, so far in my testing, over 600...
read full review »If you want to break into the digital world without spending a fortune but you're not sure what camera is best, I would highly recommend getting the Nikon D40 Digital Camera with the 18-55mm Lens. Nikon has so many great cameras out, but comparing and contrasting you will see that the Nikon D40 can do just as much as the Nikon D90 or D70. This camera has been out for quite some time, so the price has gone down and can be purchased refurbished on brand new on Amazon.com for a good price. This camera takes amazing shots with so little effort. The first time I used this camera I took it to Paris,...
read full review »I purchased the Nikon D40 with high expectations. I was conviced by the salesman that Nikon is a leader in the industry of DSLR's and that they are great for first time SLR camera owners. I was not dissappointed.
I have owned the camera now for over 3 years and it has been a very reliable and easy camera to use. The Nikon D40 has automatic settings that can help make even the greenest of photographers look like pros, but it also has the manual settings to meet the basic needs of even the most advanced photographers.
I have used this camera in all kinds of settings including sports action...
read full review »I bought the Nikon D40 camera in 2008 for a great price and am very happy with it. This camera is the bottom tier Nikon camera DSL model but not the worst. The pictures taken with it come out great and the lense that usually come with the kits are very good. I also bought a 30-200 VR zoom lense and remote control for it separately. From someone who used to take photos using a DSL film camera, I feel the camera has a nice a nice feel to it and doesn't feel cheap. There are so many manual overides that for now I'm just using automatic settings. I went with 6 megapixels because anything...

The Nikon D40's performance is excellent overall. Start-up time is good, and shutter lag at wide angle and telephoto is very good. "Prefocus" times (half-pressing and holding down the shutter button before the final exposure) are quite fast as well, with a shutter delay in that condition of only 0.098 second. Shot-to-shot cycle times are also good at about 0.6 seconds for large/fine JPEGs, and the camera...
read full review »The Nikon D40 with the 18-55 standard zoom lens is an awesome camera. This is my first DSLR, I have been shooting Canon and Nikon 35mm for several years and was leary of converting over to digital. I love the rich colors that I am able to get. It is a very simple and straightforware camera to use. The Nikon instructional dvd that I purchased with the camera was very helpful in teaching me the controls and settings that the camera offers.
Being a very budget concenious person, the quality of this camera makes it a very affordable camera. I was even able to add a new Tiffen Circular polarizer...
read full review »After going through camera after camera I decided to break down and spend money on a good camera. I did much research and decide on the Nikon D40. This camera is the best I have ever owned. I am a mother of 4 and love taking pictures of my children. Your children are only little once and taking lots of pictures of them is capturing theirr childhood. I would recommed this camera to anyone. From amateur to pro. There are so many setting on it . You will be able to take any picture that suits your wants/needs. The pictures always are clear and beautiful. The camera itself is a little...
read full review »For the price I paid for this Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera, I am for the most part...satisfied. I paid under $500 for the camera figuring I am an amutuer photographer. I did not want to jump right into the most expensive one I could find. I liked that if I like it I could always get new lenses then in return if I decided to get another camera (I would get another Nikon) I could use those lenses for the new camera as well. I have found that it is quite easy to use and I really like the options it has....although I have recently become interested in HDR photography and that is the one thing...
read full review »I have the Nikon D40 Digital Camera. I got it as a Christmas present from my husband. I can't believe how close I can get to everything with my 200 lens and how clear the images are. I have always been interested in photography but I have never had a camera good enough to do the things that I wanted to do. Now I find myself taking pictures of everything. If I am at an school event or such, and I see someone that doesn't have a Camera I will offer to take pictures for them and email them the pictures. It is great practice for me.
Because the Nikon D40 is digital I can download my pictures with...
read full review »I took the plunge and bought the Nikon D40 in a package deal that came w/the 18-55 mm lense and the 75-200 mm lense and I have since purchased the 200-300 mm lense. It was my big switch over from the film Canon Rebel.
I am so happy w/this camera I can't even tell you. In the past, I had to carry two cameras to shoot weddings because one was in color and the other in black and white film. Plus, I wasted so much film and developing costs because I couldn't view and delete the duds.
I can edit on my camara, on my printer, and on my photoshop elements 7. I can do things to photos that I never...

I picked nikon primarily because I wanted a telephoto zoom with VR that took good pictures but was inexpensive. The nikon 55-200mm VR lens that goes for around $230.
Canon just released a similar lens a few months ago but wasn't available until after i bought my D40. I also use the lightweight 55-200 VR lens for portraits. It does a terrific job as long as you have plenty of light and/or good flashes. I like the longer lenses because it makes candid portraits easier, and flattens facial features. Best of all, you don't need to sell a lens to...
We bought the Nikon D40 because we have two small children under three years old and we wanted to get pictures of them that were not blurred. This camera worked great for what we needed it for. We have gotten tons of pictures of them both actually looking at the camera. Almost too many, it is taking a lot more time to go through and pick out the good pictures.
My only complaint is that it does not have a great zoom lense that comes with it and it is expensive to buy. Besides that it is great. It did take some time to get used to looking through the view finder again as it does not show the image...
read full review »I just got a Nikon D40 digital camera and I am loving it. It may only be 6 mega pixels but with the lenses it does not matter. The picture quality is great. The only thing that I cant do with it because it is only 6 mega pixels is blow the pictures up to poster size which I really don't need to do anyway. I use to have a point and shoot and comparing the picture quality between the D40 and the point and shoot, lets just say there is no comparison. The Nikon D40 blows the point and shoot away. I enjoy taking photos of birds and wild life and this camera does everything that I need...
