Great camera for the price

3

I received this camera as a gift from my parents, who want frequent pictures of their new grandson.  It's an inexpensive model, and therefore I was pleasantly surprised to find that it takes videos as well as still pictures.  The autofocus is a little tricky, especially if your subject moves at all, and the accuracy of color in the photos suffers if you are not using natural light (i.e., sunlight).  The color accuracy is even worse in artificial light when you are using the video function. However, for an inexpensive camera, this model has served me well, and the photo size/quality (5+ megapixels) is pretty good for the price.

The 5600 is a sweet little camera that packs a good amount of image-capturing into a device that fits into the palm of your hand. I come from the days of the Nikon FM and series F camera bodies, so that took a little getting used to. Photo quality is good--the camera can handle up to 5 Mpixels, provided you've got the card space for that. Easy to find and use controls, with a toggle controlling the Zoom/telephoto and a thumbdial handling the different photo modes. Set properly, you can easily record 20 minutes worth of video on a 128MB pny chip. There's a tripod screwmount at the base of the camera, so you're not left holding the thing when trying to pan or otherwise steady a shot. I found the controls intuitive. The one failing I'm still sturuggling with is the so called "re-eye fix" technology. When shooting cats--and my furry companions are often my subjects--the red-eye fix can't quite seem to compensate and remove the red as promised. The viewfinder is pretty much useless, and there's an annoying "blackout" of the video monitor in between flash photos: takes about 2 seconds to clear, during which time you can't really do much. Decent battery life out of two AA's, but I always travel with an extra set in the carry case just to be safe. It's hard to judge battery life--since the same circuits power the flash as well as the video viewfinder. I've had this baby for over a year now, and I love it.
