Nightwish —

I already wrote 2 reviews on the previous vocalist (tajra) and the current vocalist (anette) but now I am writing a review on the band itself. created in 1996 by tuomas holopainen a keyboardest who wanted to do a acoustic band and decided to ask his friend/school mate emppu and tarja to join his product. once he heard tarja's powerful/operatic voice tuomas decided to add metal elements and thus nightwish was born. their first album "angels fall first" wasn't as successful as their later albums, I guess people were not into them as much then. some people consider nightwish to be one of the first symphonic metal bands, and nightwish helped popluarized the sub genre: symphonic power metal.

after the last concert tour from their "end of a era" tour the band decided that it was best to continue without tarja in which she was giving an "open letter". some people believe this method was uncalled for and they should have told her in person that she was fired. I believe the band had their reasons for doing this method, it was probably easier for them (the band) to do it that so there would be no confrontation and everyone can move on their way. instead the media got wind of what happend and thought it would be great to over hype the incident.

it makes me happy to know that both tarja and the band have continued on ward in their careers and neither decided to quit. once anette join the band, most fans of the old era decided to stop listening to nightwish on the account of anette and the sound which the band is known for changed from a symphonic metal band to a pop band. they sound the same to me and I think most fans are over reacting. It's still the same band (music wise) the only diffrence is the vocals.

Nightwish primarly uses symphonic metal and power metal in their music, although most would consider nightwish apart of the Symphonic Black Metal, Gothic Metal and Heavy Metal Genres. the first album has elements of folk metal and with the latest album the band has made a return to the folk metal genre with songs like the islander.

regardless of what you have heard and are into metal with female vocals then you should check this band out or already aware of this band, or perhaps a fan of the "old era" but unsure of what to make of the "new era" should check this band out.
