Nicorette stop smoking gum gave me the hiccups from hell.

1 star rating

not wanting to discuss smoking at all, trying to quit, grumpy as heck, thinking cold turkey
Pros

some people say it works for them, only use as needed which is nice, not as costly as some stop smoking aids

Cons
super duper hiccups, expensive esp if you can't use it

When Nicorette came out with Fruit Chill on a flavor for stop smoking gum, I thought that sounded like a good bet. I don't like mint, and most of the gums (stop smoking or not) lean that way. Ugh. I avoid mint toothpastes and anything else mint. I just don't like it, and it makes my tongue quiver like I've had some super hot food.

I tried Nicorette fruit chill gum twice. Both times I got these chest busting hiccups. I do not mean normal hiccups. I mean that if I had smoked a cigarette, it probably would have blown out hurricane force windforce and pierced the wall.

Both times, when I spit the gum in a Kleenix, those hiccups went away. Hum. Sounds like a pattern.

I looked up this gum, and hiccups are a side effect. That does not sound like a big deal. Hiccups happen. These were not normal hiccups though. I could not talk, walk, or even think normal with my body spazing from sudden onset tsumani hiccups.

This gum does work for some (based on things I've read), and that's great. I wish it worked for me. I can say I couldn't smoke while chewing, since the hiccups were so massive as to render any normal human actions virtually impossible. If you don't get that side effect, or if it's not as extreme, then this may be a good solution. I really can't say though, since Nicirette gave me chest busting hiccups and a bad aftertaste to boot.

I get "gutcups". They feel like they're coming from the pits of hell. Luckily, they go away after about 5 minutes but man, they are annoying!

Twenty minutes about drove me nuts. Geez. Who would think hiccups could be so massive? But, they quit as least, so I will be thankful.

Teehee. Yes. I am glad it was not tsumani gas. Whew. That would have been awful.

Are you and GiGi related? My sister is here - Katrena. We share reviews that we like.

I had to laugh too, because the first time I got those hiccups was on a work trip. I was in the back seat, and my boss and co-worker pretended they did not hear those massive hiccups. They had to wonder about that. I've never heard such loud ones.

I'm still working on it. May have to go cold turkey. That's what I did when pregnant and the boys little. Some very stressful family stuff came up later, and then . . . there I went again - smoking. Bummer.

GigiandAdonai recommend I read this review because she was laughing so hard. I too was laughing! I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Hopefully there is something else out there for you that won't cause "chest busting hiccups". :)

Oh, this review has me rolling in tears! I am going to save it just so that in the rare times I need a good laugh at the office I can go to this. Hey, at least the side effect was only hiccups--what if you would of had gas at both hemispheres. Then you would have been a walking natural disaster ;+) I have tears rolling down my cheeks as I write this--thanks for the comedy hour!

My family can't stand it when I get the hiccups because I keep them for hours. Because I have vertigo I cannot hold my breath or I will get light headed. I guess if I faint I would get rid of the hiccups.

Great info--got a laugh out of your description too. I know trying to quit is no laughing matter, but you crack me up in some of the things that you write!

PattyTherre wrote on Jan 25, 2009 at 9:50PM

I didn't know you smoked. I hope you find something that helps you to quit. My uncle once had hiccups for weeks and almost went nuts. He had to go to the hospital!
