The Case

I'm a big fan of a good, hard-hitting, never-let-up-on-the-action kind of movie.  The last time we were at the theater, we had no particular film in mind, so we decided on the new Nick Cage flick, Next.  I wasn't expecting all that much, but honestly, the movie blew me away!

The Good

Next is about a man who can see the future, but only two minutes into the future.  This is revealed in the first few minutes, and from there, you're just along for the ride.  And what a ride!  The movie is fast-paced, exciting, and had me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time.  The characters are fun and real, and their motivations throughout the story are consistent, which is not always the case with a movie like this.  The performances from Cage, Jessica Biel, and Julianne Moore were exceptional, especially Moore, who stole the show in more than one scene.  And the best part for me was that the plot wasn't predictable.  Even if you think you know what's going on or coming up 'next,' you don't.  Unless you're clairvoyant!  Or can see two minutes into the future!

The Bad

If you see the movie, expect entertainment, not depth.  C'mon, it's an action flick.  The catalyst for the film's plot is pretty thin, and even though the characters are strong - and humorous at times - their stories start at the beginning of the movie and end at the end.  There's not a lot of history.  Also, if a character isn't a main character, don't ponder them or their actions too much.  They're gonna be two-dimensional, guaranteed.  Which is okay; the movie rocks despite all of that!

The Verdict

Four stars!  Next is solid entertainment!
