3x/ Fiber, 30% less Sugar than Regular Chocolate Bar/RealSugar
This was a new find for me. I was looking through the Chocolate Bar section at Walmart, and found this new chocolate bar company, "NewTree"---at least, for me. Luckily, I stopped to read the label on this NewTree Superfruit 65% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bar. I had never heard of this brand before. It was made in Belgium, and I knew that Belgium had a great tradition of making excellent chocolates. But, I'm not a big chocolate fan either, so others may have heard of it before me.
The label on this NewTree Superfruit 65% **Dark Chocolate Bar, touted the great ingredients in this bar. It was very impressive to me. It said, "Superfruit 65%** Cocoa, Dark Chocolate with Cranberries, Goji Berries, Pomegranate, Grape and Papaya. It also stated that it contained 3x more Fiber and 30% Less Sugar than regular chocolate bars. It sounded like it would be full of chunky fruits, and I wasn't too sure of the papaya in it. Never heard of papaya in a chocolate bar, before either. Anyway, I was intrigued enough, so I bought this 2.82 oz. NewTree Superfruit 65% Belgium Chocolate Bar for $3.50. I was not exactly sure what it was going to taste like. I purchased it at Walmart though, so I knew that I would have no problem returning it, if it didn't suit my taste requirements.
The NewTree Chocolate Company was founded in Belgium in 2001 by a Biochemist. NewTree's team of chocolatiers and nutritionists decided to unite science with the art of chocolate making. In 2003, it was introduced to America. NewTree offers a diverse group of Milk and Dark Chocolates that have a medley of flavors, and unique extracts for well-being. They break it down into Six Distinct Categories with their own unique health benefits: Indulgence, Energizing, Rejuvenating, Harmonizing, Soothing, and Comfort chocolates.
This NewTree Superfruit 65% **Dark Chocolate Bar invites you to enjoy the flavor of fine Belgium Dark Chocolate with the combined benefits of **selected fruits high in anti-oxidants: Cranberries, Goji berries, Pomegranate, Grape, and Papaya, low in Sugar, High in Fiber--all for your well-being. Plus, it also adds Grape Extract ( an natural source of anti-oxidants) plus three times more fiber and 30 % less sugar than regular chocolate bars. I was very interested in finding out how all of these ingredients were put together to make a healthier, more nutritious, chocolate bar.
The NewTree Company reflects a "new" approach to chocolate that includes the use of natural plants and ingredients (implied by the word "tree"), according to their label. Hence, the NewTree name brand. These chocolates are made in Belgium which has tradition of excellence in chocolate-making.The majority of their chocolate is from the rainforests and they claim 85% of their cacao is organic, by default. Most of the cacao used in their products is grown on remote farms that do not use pesticides. For your health, NewTree contains a "precise amount of an active ingredient know to positively affect health and is carefully selected based on scientific evidence for its suitability in the chocolate.
TASTE: I ate two pieces of this chocolate. It has a pleasant, non- bitter chocolate favor with a slightly tart finish to it. There are no chunky fruit pieces in this bar. There is actually no apparent fruit by sight, anyway. It's all in the taste. You can taste that tart, sweet fruit combination with chocolate, in this bar. It's not overwhelming, either. It's subtle, but, definately there. It has an ultra-smooth texture with the slightest miniscule, chewy crunch of fruit. Which fruit, I'm not sure, though it's probably the cranberries. It's really good and not ultra sweet, either.
Plus, there is 7 g of fiber in each serving size. I like the idea that it isn't as sweet as other similar chocolate bars. The addition of the fiber actually makes the consumption of this chocolate bar a lot more healthy. Who would have thought about doing this? The chocolatiers and nutritionists at NewTree obviously thought of it. You can find out about this unique company on their website. www.greentree.com
WHAT'S IN IT: This NewTree Superfruit 65% Cocoa Bar contains Pomegranate, Goji Berries, Grape Extract, Papaya, Cranberries, and Dark Chocolate in addition to Fiber. Dark Chocolate is a nutritional treasure. It contains glucids, lipids, proteins, micro-nutrients, and anti-oxidants. It also contains Three Fatty Acids: Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, and Oleic Acid in identical proportions. These three fats combine to give one cardiovascular benefits, and a good balance in the Fats/Unsaturated Fats profile. The superfruits in this bar are also anti-oxidant powerhouses. I won't expound on all of the individual fruits and their virtues in this bar, because most of you are familiar with them.
I will talk a little about Goji Berries though, because less people are familiar with their health profile. These berries have been used for 6,00 years in China, Tibet and India. They're touted for their ability to: Protect the liver, help eyesight, strengthen the legs, boost immune function, improve circulation, and promote longevity. They are an evergreen shrub that grows in China, Mongolia, and the Himalayas of Tibet. They are usually consumed dried, as they are in the NewTree chocolate bar. Papaya is also utilized in this chocolate bar for its digestive benefits. It contains papain, which is also used in meat tenderizers to aid in breaking down tough fibers.
So, NewTree has created a bar to bring together the power of Anti-Oxidant Rich Fruits, with the benefit of Dark Chocolate, Fiber, and less Sugar.

MY OPINION: If I were to choose a dark chocolate bar to eat, I'd probably continue to eat NewTree Superfruit 65% Cocoa. I was very impressed with their commitment to making a quality chocolate with added health benefits. I like my chocolate equation: Chocolate+Fiber+Anti-Oxidants+Less Sugar=Awesome taste!
