Neurontin was initially prescribed to treat seizures in those suffering from epilepsy. Its use has expanded to treat people suffering from neuropathic pain, bipolar disorder, migraine, and multiple sclerosis (MS).

I began taking Neurontin before it became available in generic form (Gabapentin). My neurologist at the time told me that it was a "wonder drug" that had proven immensely helpful in combating certain symptoms of MS. Neurontin or Gabapentin as the generic is called was originally used to treat certain seizures associated with epilepsy. In recent years it has also been used to control nerve pain as well as many other things. To name a few....bi-polar disorder, relieve the pain of diabetic neuropathy , and to treat and prevent hot flashes (sudden strong feelings of heat and sweating) in women who are being treated for breast cancer or who have experienced menopause. It seems to be an all around type drug.

1st stabilizer to work without "flatlining" me

I have been taking Neurontin for about 8 years now for bipolar disorder. I am one of those folks out there who is intolerant to almost all psychiatric medications. I have taken the SSRI's, tricyclics, old and new antipsychotics, tranquilizers, and of course mood stablizers. I had to stop every single one due to intolerable (and sometimes downright BIZARRE side effects). Other mood stabilizers tend to cause a sort of "flat line" effect. They take care of the mania and depression by causing my brain to feel no emotion, which for me, is not an acceptable way to live.

Gabapentin (Neurontin) significantally helps neuropathy.

Gabapentin which is generic for Neurontin is medication recommended for several serious health problems including neuropathy for diabetics. It is available in capsules, tablets and an oral solution.

Therer are some serious side effects including dizziness, sleepiness, fatique and nausea. The side effects go on and on includng depression and possible dry skin problems.

Pregnant and nursing mothers and people with any renal problems need to really way the good with the bad.

My personal experience is this is really a good medication for my needs. I am a diabetic and suffer from nerve damage...

I have been on this medication for almost 3 yrs now. I will tell you that since I have been on it, its made a huge difference! This is a wonderful medication for those who have nerve damage!

I tried this drug 6 wks post op from surgery for nerve pain But it didn't really help even whenI increased to 900mg.Nothing at all really helps the pain.I've been just suffering since march from a routine surgery and have had thre moore to try to correct it with no help.I would reccommend one to try if needed for this pain.Who knows it may work for you.

Neurontin gave me a 'pain in the head' of a migraine.

I tried this medication to help with my fibromyalgia....instead of taking my normal Celebrex...unfortunately for me, it caused me such a severe migraine that my doctor had to take me off of it and put me on Fioricet for the migraines...now I wish I had never tried this medication.
