Neurontin In Generic form it is Gabapentin —

Neurontin or Gabapentin as the generic is called was originally used to treat certain seizures associated with epilepsy. In recent years it has also been used to control nerve pain as well as many other things. To name a few....bi-polar disorder, relieve the pain of diabetic neuropathy , and to treat and prevent hot flashes (sudden strong feelings of heat and sweating) in women who are being treated for breast cancer or who have experienced menopause. It seems to be an all around type drug.

I suffer from multiple pain sites, I have had 5 surgeries in the past 13 years. Three of them were nerve related and the other two were on my knees. I also managed to rip almost every muscle in my back and suffer from trigger point induced nerve pain in my upper back. Now add Fibromylagia to that and you have a lot of pain. For years I was on loratab, darvocet, celebrex, tylenol 3 and a few others, now I am using Gabapentin and Fentenyl.

To wean me off of the loratabs of which I was on 4 a day (7.5 tabs) my doctor first put me on the Fentenyl patch. After 3 months of that so I could get used to it, he added Gabapentin. I take 900mg. per day (300mg every 8 hours)and it has helped ease the pain somewhat. I still have break through pain and thats when I reach for my loratab.

Now the Gabapentin has many side effects and I will not list all of them here, but as with 99.9% of medications the usual are all listed. The only one I have from this medicine is the GAS, let me tell you I now take gas pills religiously. But considering it has calmed down my nerve pain to the tolerable level, I can deal with gas. Another plus to Gabapentin ,it is also used to treat migraines.....can I get an AMEN!!! So now my usual 3-4 migraines a month are gone.

Another plus to Gabapentin is I no longer feel spacey all the time from being on those other pain pills. Although the fentenyl can put me to sleep at the drop of a hat. But the Gabapentin has restored my feelings of being drunk all the time.

Unlike the popular opinion of many people, there is no miracle cure for pain. You just keep searching for a combination that will give relief and allow you to get sleep when you need it. To function in society as best you can. or just be able to be almost pain free more than you used too. Although I still have break through pain 3-4 times a week I am doing better from the research that is ongoing about pain and its causes.

I am not recommending medication to anyone, but if the suggestion comes from your doctor about using Gabapentin (Neurontin) give it a try. You can initiate the conversation and see what his/her recommendations are and go from there as well. Just be prepared for any of the side effects and try it, you may find relief as I did.

Hey KW! I am taking the equate brand gas pills and they seem to help a whole lot. I also changed the way I take Gabapentin, I make sure I have food on my stomach about 30 minutes before I take mine and that has helped me some as well. Good Luck and I hope you find a way that helps you deal with the gas ;) Ron

I am having the same side effects. I had taken Neurontin for YEARS but stopped about 3 years ago. I just started again and have the same side effect as you. I NEVER had that when I took it before. It is REALLY bad for me right now, I am hoping it will calm down the longer I am on it. Can I ask, what gas pills you are taking? Mine is SOOOO embarassing and I wouild like to calm it down...... THanks - KW, a fellow chronic pain patient.

no not really I am on the Fentanyl and Gabapentin 24/7 and loratabs (1 tab) a few times a week for breakthrough pain. BUt my life is much easier as what I am taking now doesn't make me feel drunk or spaced out all the time. The Gabapentin is pretty good, I am actually on the starter does according to my doctor (900mg a day) and 50mg Fenanyl patches and so far it is working for me. On a good note my insurance pays for all but a $5 co-pay a month, perhaps yours will too as Fentanyl is around $140 a month for 10 patches. The Gabapentin is only like $35 a month I believe (if insurance doesn't cover it that is)

Did this get you off all pain meds? I take Vicadon for the pain but have been able to function fine on it but since it has been labled chronic after 2 years, my Doctor wants to try things that have a longer timelife.
