Looking for ways to secure your company's computer network? Many problems plague computer systems and tech support staff members must work diligently to correct problems and prevent new ones from starting. One magazine that assists techies is Network Computing, a magazine for IT professionals.

Magazine Commentary:

Network Computing is a magazine is made by IT professionals for IT professionals. It proudly boasts "For IT, by IT" on the front cover and it promises that the bulk of the articles contained within each issue are composed by actual IT people- those who know the business and know the problems, challenges, and rewards that IT people face each day.

What you get with a magazine like this one is about 100 pages each month of articles pertaining to new products, different problems and resolutions, and advice on ways to prevent computer network problems before they occur. Some of the material presented here could apply to individual pc users but the focus of Network Computing is on corporate computer networks, how to utilize them, and how to protect them. Some of the advice is common sense but other solutions are more unique and offer innovative approaches to both old and new problems.

Reader polls are common in Network Computing and they can be useful to tech workers who want to analyze the opinions of other techies. The questions posed to readers can cover just about any topic in the world of networks and high tech. There are a few hundred people are involved in each poll and the results are displayed in the magazine in either bar graph or pie chart form.

The most useful departments in Network Computing are the sneak previews and Crash Course. The sneak previews offer some insight into new products and services and they keep tech support people up to date on new and better ways to do things. Crash Course is useful because it explains how to install, clean, update, or otherwise manage a smooth running network.

The writing in this magazine is rather dry and it won't appeal to very many people. You won't find much in the way of humor with Network Computing. The magazine is fact based, clear, concise, and serious. Keeping networks running smoothly is important business and Network Computing wants to make sure you, the tech support professional, have the tools you need to perform.

Bottom Line Viewpoint:

Overall, Network Computing is a good magazine for tech support professionals and it offers some sound advice on ways to protect your network from the daily software threats that are so common nowadays. It isn't the most exciting magazine and individuals who have no interest in high tech will start to feel very drowsy if they attempt to read even a few pages. But those who work in the high tech field and who are in charge of network performance and protection will enjoy this magazine. It offers some good advice on networking; helping to keep your company's system safe and secure
