I have had Netflix service three different times, and have also tried Blockbuster's competing program. While Blockbuster offered the ability to get free rentals at their brick and mortar locations, they also sent you edited versions of certain titles. I'm not down with censorship, so I cancelled the Blockbuster service after I learned of this practice.

That said, Netflix is only worth it if you watch a lot of DVDs, keeping the pipeline flowing. If you keep the same three titles for weeks, you might as well rent from the local video store instead.

A new feature offered on the Netflix site is the ability to watch movies instantly on your compter. I'm not big on watching movies at my desk, but as long as the movie in question is not a super-widescreen epic, it is very convenient to be able to watch this way. For instance, this is how I watched the shot-on-DV doc Overnight that I just reviewed here on Viewpoints.com.

Another thing I like about Netflix is their selection of rare and out-of-print titles. When a DVD goes out of print, the price for a copy of that title tends to go through the roof. At least with Netflix, you get the opportunity to view the film, if not to own it.

In some places, particularly rural areas, discs may take a couple of days to arrive, but in most cities, the turnaround time is usually one day.

Netflix is also a blessing to parents with small children, who rarely can get out for a movie, or even to make it down to the video store.

I love netflix, but Mac users should be aware that the video on demand service is PC only! All and all though, as a mail rental service netflix is the best.
