Oh yes, those glorious memories! Did you know that they converted the old piano factory into a shopping mall called (you guessed it) The Piano Factory! Back when it was still in operation, I used to use a vacation day or bank holiday now and then to come out to Geneva on the train, then take the bus over to St. Charles. It was great, I would get to the Piano Factory early when I almost had the run of the place and stock up on certain things or pick up a book at the second-hand book store there. Then I would go up to where the vending machines were and buy a cup of coffee, then sit there at one of the little tables and watch out the window. Then afterwards, I would come out the back way of the mall, and head over "our" bridge and up to that little playground-park where we used to "swing" -- remember, it was just about a block from Grandma's -- then I would walk back towards town until I got to G&G's white house which still looked almost exactly the same except that someone had replaced the old pipe railing on the back steps with a new railing. Then I would walk back toward the river and into town, eat something and catch the bus, and then the train back home the way I had come.
Alas, the Piano Factory closed down so that they could raze it all and put up some totaly ugly new townhouses. What a desecration. And no more shopping trips either. Of course, we love and remember both G & G, but when I was walking around there,it would be you and Grandpa who I was really thinking of most. You know, those hills out there are really hard to walk up and down for too long when you get older and I remember how Grandpa took us on those long walks without a single word of complaint. He really loved us, Mel.
