This site has been around for quite some time. It was started by college students, for college students as an alternative to going out and spending money on entertainment. Especially since college students don't usually have money to spend on entertainment. Although over the years it has gone from kid friendly to kid oriented over the years (after all parents spend money, college students don't).

It is, and will remain, a free site, however over the years to keep it running they have added banners and ads throughout the site. This does tend to slow things down.

There are hundreds of games, from originals to arcade classics with a Neopets spin. They have a few site wide story-lines/plots each year for anyone and everyone to join. You can earn trophies, avatars, run a gallery or store, dress/customize your pets, do quests, or chat on the message boards. This is really only a sampling of what you can do as it would be much too long a list to state here.

There is also an option of joining Neopets Premium for around $8 a month. This will give you more random events, an email account at Neopets.com, a weekly free Space Faerie scratch card and it will take away all those annoying ads on the site.

While it does seem to be a children's site, I suggest a second look be taken. While it is drawn in a cartoon style some of the games are simply beyond children. For example they have a weekly puzzle game that many times requires algebraic calculations which are beyond most of the non-engineers I know.

The plain and simple facts are that it is a free website that can completely fill your free time if you let it. Even if you pay for Premium Neopets it's cheaper than cable, and you are thinking instead of mindlessly watching television.
