Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois is kind of like a carnival on a peninsula sticking out into Lake Michigan right to the east of downtown. It was built in 1916 as a working pier but also as a gathering place for events. It's now a social hang out (kind of touristy) but does offer boat tours of the city of Chicago.

When I told my boys that I was going to visit Navy Pier in Chicago, their dad wanted to know what kind of Navy Pier they'd have on a lake. I checked on that, and it's actually called Navy Pier in honor of veterans from World War II. The Navy did use the facilities during the War, and there's a Navy training base close Chicago still today.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but Navy Pier really is kind of like going to the fair here. There's a big Ferris wheel, a carousel and swing ride. They have a Children's Museum which reminds me of a fun house with wacky mirrors outside and also an IMAX and the Shakespeare Theatre for entertainment. Sprinkled in are shops and restaurants - even a McDonalds.

My favorite spot on the Navy Pier strip was the Wilson Stained Glass Museum (search Navy Pier to find my review and lots of photos from the museum). They have some wonderful windows and stained glass pieces. I've always loved stained glass. That's free too, so it's definitely worth walking through even if you're not a big art fan.

Above the Stained Glass museum is a large hall where they have special events. Definitely check the schedule. I stumbled on some kind of health fair and got to see some salsa dancers perform. Again, there was no charge.

There were a number of boat tours along the pier. Some were speed boat tours. Others were longer and focused on the history of the area. You could even take a meal cruise from the Pier. I didn't think I'd make check out at the motel if I got on a boat, so I didn't get a chance to take a ride. That will be on my list for next time. Someone on the plane told me the ones that cover the history are fun and educational.

There are buses that run up the strip of buildings at Navy Pier, but I walked. I wanted to see everything. It probably takes 15 or 20 minutes to walk the length if you don't stop. The back side is quiet and very different from the front side. I went up the attraction side and back down the other side where I could enjoy the flowers and the city views.

If you have kids, they will definitely enjoy Navy Pier. It's also fun for adults, so don't mark it off the list just because they have kiddie rides and fun house mirrors. There's plenty for everyone at Navy Pier, and the view of Chicago is wonderful from out on the water.

My guy manufactured the arching "Navy Pier" signs along with a couple more signs by the tour boats! They are photographed all the time. My guy made them! GumBea
