Quick View: I have bars of all types at home. I eat protein bars, meal replacement bars, granola bars, you name it. I bought Nature's Choice - Multigrain Cereal Bars, Apple Cinnamon thinking they would be great for a light breakfast or nighttime snack. They have a lot going for them but they are just way too sweet for my taste.
My Take on Nature's Choice - Multigrain Cereal Bars, Apple Cinnamon
There are plenty of good things about these bars:
* Low Fat
* 100% Natural
* Real Fruit Filling
* Wheat Free
* Fruit Juice Sweetened
* No Hydrogenated Oil
* Kosher
* Vegan
* No Preservatives
* No Artificial Flavors
* No Artificial Colors
* Low Sodium
The ingredients are all natural but I did note that pineapple, peach and pear juice were the first ingredients which is why they are so very sweet. Apple flavor comes in a bit further down the list. Still, there isn't anything really weird in these bat and that's always a good thing.
Nutritionally, they don't offer much in the way of vitamins and minerals,. A single bar is just 120 calories and contains 1.5 grams of fat, There are 2 grams of fiber and just 1 gram of protein and no vitamins to speak of. They pack a whopping 25 grams of carbs though so really, these are just healthy, low cal, low fat donuts. And that's not a BAD thing but, at breakfast, I prefer to start out with some protein and vitamins.
Still, for picky kids who won't eat before school, one of these individually wrapped bars is certainly better than nothing or better than a real donut or fat laden muffin.
My qualm is that the bars are so sweet! Ugh. I admit I am not a big fan of super sweet foods so it could be just my preferences but wow. It's like a sugar rush the second I take a bite. I don't taste any cinnamon and very little apple.
The bars are soft and filled with an apple mixture inside of a Fig Newton-like outer wrapping. Honestly, none of it tasted that good. The consistency is quite dry and the sweetness just implodes in my mouth when I eat one. I have to have a big drink of water, tea or even *gasp* milk (which I hate) nearby to wash the bars down.
My sons don't like these bars either and they generally like sweeter things than I. These just don't cut it for any of us. I wish they did in a way because they are a good, sweet snack that feels decedent but isn't. But if you don't enjoy the smack, why eat it?
My Viewpoint
Nature's Choice - Multigrain Cereal Bars, Apple Cinnamon are natural but when I hear people say they are healthy, I wonder what they mean. There are no vitamins or minerals in these bars and they have tons of sugars in them. The sugars are natural which is a good thing but really, these are empty bars. They are low in calories and low in fat and that's a good thing but I prefer bars that contains protein and some fiber if not some vitamins as well. For me, these are just too sweet. Nature's Choice makes other varieties which may taste better to me but I don't think I'll try them. I just don't like the nutrition panel.
However in a world of preservatives, additives, fake sweeteners, and ingredients with 15 or 20 letters that would scare even a chemist, these bars are a nice change. I think kids may enjoy these and at least they don't have anything harmful in them. I give them 3 stars. I will recommend them to you if you like very sweet bars but don't expect a delicious apple cinnamon flavor from these. Expect sweetness overload.
