This is a true story and I have to tell it for you to understand a bit about Nature's Bounty Melatonin.  But first:

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a supplement not evaluated by the FDA. It is said to work in harmony with your natural sleep cycle to give you the tranquil rest you deserve, so you can awaken feeling refreshed. The maximum strength formula should be used by individuals who may need a higher level of sleep support. Adults take 1 tablet at bedtime. (from drugstore.com)

Melatonin a naturally occurring hormone (derived from serotonin) that is both endocrine (enters the bloodstream from a pineal gland) and paracrine (signaling cell phenomenon, as from the retina when light is low, when the signal is "time to sleep"). Melatonin, besides being a sleep hormone, is a very powerful antioxidant, anti-aging agent, immunoregulator, anti-depressant and sexual dysfunction regulator. From www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/melatonin.shtml

The active ingredient is 5mg of Melatonin.

The bottle is not child-safe. It has an easy to open cap and also if you don't want to unscrew it the cap flips up. The pills are small and easy to swallow.

Why my mom takes Nature's Bounty Maximum Strength Melatonin which costs about $8.00 for 60 tablets:

My mom used to taking sleeping pills. When her new doctor took her off of them she started taking Tylenol PM to sleep. She lives in an assisted living facility. I pack all her medications for the week in a med pack. Eventually the assisted living facility (Stafford Hill) wanted an order for the Tylenol PM. Her doctor told me that he was afraid that if she continued to take the PM it would make her dizzy and she would fall more than she already falls. He suggested regular Tylenol and Melatonin! I know it is unusual for a doctor to suggest supplements but our doctor does.

In the slot where her PM went I put the regular Tylenol and Nature's Bounty Maximum Strength Melatonin. Eventually I just put the Melatonin in her nighttime slot. One day I asked her how she was sleeping. She was still assuming she was taking the Tylenol PM. She said fine, why? I asked her if she knew she wasn't taking the PM. My mom said if she isn't then she is not sleeping well!! She was so certain she could only sleep if she took the Tylenol Pm.

In any case she was sleeping fine on just the Nature's Bounty Maximum Strength Melatonin . This could have been a placebo effect i.e. sugar cubes often work if the patient thinks it is a drug but since her sleeping has continued fine and she knows that she is taking Nature's Bounty Maximum Strength Melatonin  then I have to assume it works!

Great review and glad your mom is sleeping! Would this work on occassion, or do you have to take regularly?

Great news. I'm glad to hear it works and is not addictive.

This is the only thing I have ever used as sleep aid. Good review...

Good info! A child psychiatrist I work with is prescribing a lot more melatonin these days for kids who have trouble sleeping as a side effect.

I tried melatonin a few times but don't think it did much for me...I'm wondering if it has to "build up" in your system for a couple days, or maybe my dose was too low...

Nice review Jo. Actually it's not uncommon for Drs. to recommend Melatonin. There are numerous clinical studies that support its use for sleeping problems.

I've always wondered how well Melatonin works. It's nice that your mom has an option that's non-addictive.
