I signed up with National University because I liked the fact that classes were only 4 weeks, which meant I could finish my degree quicker. I was originally attending University of Phoenix, but when I moved to California, UoP was way out of my price range (everything is more expensive in California). Transferring to National University was the worst mistake and I regret it.

First off, they got me all signed up and I started classes before they had fully analyzed my transcripts. The counselor told me that most of my UoP classes would transfer over just fine and I wouldn't have to re-take those same classes. So, off I go. The classes themselves aren't that bad, it is hard to learn a lot in four weeks, but the instructors usually do a good job of covering the material and make it relative. After two classes, I finally got my transcript reviewed 'officially' and sure enough, most of my UoP classes did transfer, but they transferred as electives!!!  I had to basically start the entire program over, taking National classes. Since I had only done a couple classes at National, I went to UoP and tried to get back into their program (since I was already half way done there). Unfortunately, they had changed their requirements for my degree and it ended up it would take me longer to finish at UoP than it would if I stayed at National...like 3 months longer. Not only would it take me longer, but it was also going to cost me more. So, I decided to stick it out - bad decision number two.

After a few months, the student accounts department kicked me out of all my classes because my Financial Aid hadn't processed and I had a balance. When I contacted the financial aid department, there were two pages of something that they needed from me in order to process my request. Why they never told me that, I don't know. Not once did they contact me and tell me they were missing stuff. So, fine, I get them their two pieces of paper. But now I'm stuck...Since I had a balance, student accounts wouldn't let me enroll in any classes, but now my financial aid won't get processed unless I'm enrolled in classes. Uh, ok, financial aid is suppose to pay the balance, but how am I suppose to get financial aid unless I can enroll in classes, and how can I enroll in classes if I have a balance. After explaining this several times to several people, the student accounts department let me enroll in a couple classes with the stipulation that my account was fully paid within the month. Well, my financial aid got processed and approved, paid my balance, and I was on my way again.

Too bad the same exact thing happened again a year later. You'd think I would have learned my lesson, right? But no, since I was already a student and just applied to renew my financial aid, I didn't realize I had to fill out the application and everything all over again. Oh well, after being kicked out again by student accounts, getting paperwork to financial, I was again in the same circle of balance, classes, financial aid, balance...however, this time I could not get student services to budge. The woman in student accounts actually hung up on me because I started to raise my voice and get frustrated. I was told I had to go take out a personal loan to pay the $3000 balance that my financial aid was suppose to pay. After a few months of looking for a loan, I got National to give me one of their student loans to pay the balance and get enrolled back in classes and have my financial aid come through, and then get a refund from National to pay National back for the loan. You confused yet? I sure was.

All this is not to mention that the price per class went from $800 to almost $1400 in one year. So sad.

So, after my battles with student accounts, it has now taken me an extra year to finish (only 5 more classes now, unless something else comes up); and with the higher prices, it is costing me so much more than anticipated. So, as you can see, I would have been better staying with UoP - I'd be finished by now with less student loans to pay off.

One more thing to add and I'll be done (sorry this is so long). Most of the instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful and really do try to understand the student situations and get us the information we need to learn the topics, but not all the instructors at National are what I would consider up to par. The first class I had to take was a VERY basic computer class (this is a mouse, you move it around the desktop and it moves the cursor on the screen). Being an IT professional for over 5 years, I didn't need that class; but National does NOT allow you to test out of any of their "core" classes. The professor for that class was so dumb, I couldn't believe it. Someone asked if they could do a Window's search by date and the professor said he didn't they could. Well, that is wrong, you can do a search by date, all the instructor had to do was look at the options, but he didn't even do that. Some of the basic things that should be a requirement of a teacher, are evidently overlooked by National. My last teacher couldn't even speak proper English. He would get a word right every now and then, but the rest I seriously could not understand. Thankfully, it was an online class that was mostly done via the textbook and my own writing.

I am looking to many different private universities in San Diego and I went to UOP for two on-campus classes and dropped out because I was not happy with the class structure; it focused heavily on group work, inside and outside the classroom and I do not prefer that learning structure set up at UOP. Looking into UOP and NU, I noticed that they are not both accredited by the same accrediting agency; UOP is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and NU is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities, which also accredits SDSU, and maybe that is why the credits were not transferrable from UOP to NU. As far as the teachers go, every college has incompetent professors, including SDSU & UOP so I do not believe that is a very relative factor that should be considered when choosing NU. The financial aid nightmare that you went through sounds like it had a huge factor in your opinion of NU and that is understandable, being that you had such a horrible experience, but that has nothing to do with the quality of education offered at NU.
