YOU DON'T FORGET
No one in a coastal zone will ever forget the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, especially the people who lived in areas hit by storms. While "my" islands, Sanibel and Captiva in southwest Florida, are once again beautiful and have recovered nicely, my husband and I always plan carefully for each year's storm season.
PLANS SAVE LIVES
The only good thing about a hurricane is that you know it's coming. We rely on the National Weather Center's web site http://nhc.noaa.gov/ to keep us informed. (The NHC stands for National Hurricane Center). During an event, the site is updated every few hours with all the data gathered by the Hurricane Hunter airplane and the multitude of scientists tracking the storm.
MEDIA CAN GO NUTS
We make our evacuation plans based on this web site's information, and have learned that other sources may not be as up-to-date. Other sources are definitely more dramatic and can incite unnecessary panic. So we stick to the facts on the NOAA site.
Libby's Hot Tip: Coastal residents can add an NHC icon to their tool bar in hurricane season, for easy access to current info.
WRAP-UP
The NHC web site has lots of useful hurricane information, invaluable to new residents. It's a true educational tool.
The Bottom Line: Libby Relies on It!
