In San Francisco we had a similar very positive experience. The cost was $70 for 3 days and we were upgraded from a compact to a full-sized car. Mileage was and is unlimited but even before gas prices went sky high the price at National was $4.00 a gallon so make sure you fill up before you bring the car back.
Most recently we chose National because of their policy. We could pick up the car in Falmouth, MA and drive it to New York ($77.00) where we dropped it off at the airport. We then picked up a car (after our trip) in NY and returned it to Falmouth ($110.00). Each was one day but well worth it.
In fact National is so accommodating that although we had planned to drop it off at one airport due to a change we had to drop it off at another. They had no problem with our doing this.
We decided on National in San Francisco for that very reason as well and there are no drop-off charges.
Our experiences with the service have been fine. Of course each office is different so generalizing isn’t something I want to do. However “in general” we have been treated well.
Based on my experiences with National I would recommend this car rental agency. Look around for coupons and compare them with other agencies. My experience has been that in the car rental business the price you pay doesn't have much to do with the quality of the car or the service you get. Our experience of having a choice of cars was different in different locations.

I like it!
