This is probably true for most immigrant parents.
Even if I had my schooling in St. Xavier's School in India - a missionary school, I find it difficult to understand the things being taught to my kids.
Per our curriculum, we had one set of books for each subject for each grade being referred to in the entire state ( and in case of Central Board Schools, accross the nation).

We learnt atleast 3 different languages while in school. So we kind of could devise the best way of learning a new language - if needed.

Per that, a language had two items to distinguish itself - alphabet and grammer.
So in learning a language and its literature, the course was divided into three categories - Reading and Comprehension - involving Prose and Poetry and Grammer.

Under R & C, we had short stories and poetries to read followed by marked questions to answer. This makes the student to focus their minds on important aspects of the story and be able to reproduce the same when asked.
Instead over here, they tell the student to read a few chapters from ANY book of his/her liking and then just write about it. Expecting them to write the summary, details and their thoughts of what they read.

We had one set of notebooks for each subject. One book for the classwork and one for the homework. For Running hand, we always had ruled book to practice. Here the classwork and homework is a photocopy on a blank page. Do they expect that the 2nd and 3rd graders be able to write on a blank paper in Cursive neatly? I do not think even I could manage that.

Same in other subjects. In Math, instead of learning each operation fast, they not only have to learn to come to a solution, they are taught various ways of doing the same. Knowing several ways of solving the same problem has its advantages, it should come after the children have learnt and mastered one way.

Those are my thoughts.
