My Secret Girlfriend is not nearly as funny as the teasers for the show made it look. I expected a silly, raunchy, comedy along the lines of movies like American Pie, Sex Drive, and Road Trip. I figured it was going be a little juvenile but good for a laugh. Nope, definitely not what I expected.
First of all, I didn't expect it to be filmed entirely in sort of a first-person point of view. The show's makers attempt to make the whole show as if the viewer is a character and it's shot from their point of view. It's poorly done. All the actors look into and speak to the camera as if they are speaking to you. "You" keep seeing text messages from "your" friends. In the scenes that take place in a car, all the actors are shot from the side of their heads as if you are riding in the passenger seat. It feels un-natural and forced. I get the idea of the effect they are trying to achieve. But either the concept itself doesn't work, or the way they execute it fails. It ends up not being immersive and engaging, but weird and annoying.
The humor itself is not funny. It doesn't feel fresh. It doesn't make me laugh. It's not as much "silly" as it is just "dumb". It's not juvenile in the funny way. It's the kind of juvenile that unless you're a 14 year old boy who gets a great big thrill out of girls in their bra and even a mention of a penis, you couldn't possibly even chuckle at My Secret Girlfriend. If you're any older than that, the jokes are old and tired and simply referencing breasts or penises or having sex isn't funny.
I'm far from being a prude. I love even filthy dirty jokes and scenes. I have no problem with raunchy stuff when it's funny or important to the plot or necessary to set the scene or natural to the character. However, the dirtiness in My Secret Girlfriend is pervasive and serves no purpose whatsoever except to be dirty. If you're old enough to be allowed to watch that kind of content, you're too old to appreciate it in the way the show uses it.
